PUPILS in Lifton have shown their generosity by collecting a donation to support some of the community’s most vulnerable.

Schoolchildren at Lifton Community Academy have put their fundraising skills to good use by supporting Launceston Food Bank.

After choosing the food bank as its charity, the school council ran a creative ‘Design Your Dream Christmas Lunch’ competition, raising funds to support local families.

Following these fundraising efforts, this week, pupils were joined by Yvonne King from Launceston Food Bank and Shelly Vanstone from Tesco as they visited the store to purchase essential items from the charity’s shopping list. The children carefully checked prices, weights and use-by dates to make sure the products were suitable before adding them to their trolley.

The school has expressed that the fundraising project forms part of Lifton Academy’s wider focus on kindness, responsibility and encouraging pupils to get involved in their community. Staff praised the pupils for representing the school so well and for showing thoughtfulness and maturity throughout the activity.

Adam Hill, headteacher at Lifton Community Academy, has praised the children’s efforts saying that he and the school as a whole is ‘really proud’ of the council and the compassion they have demonstrated.

He said: “We’re really proud of our school council for the compassion and care they showed through this project. Supporting the food bank has helped pupils see how small actions can make a real difference, while learning valuable life skills along the way.”

Tracey Cleverly, CEO of Learning Academy Partnership, has said activities like give young people insight into how they can play a positive role within the community.

She said: “Activities like this help children develop empathy, confidence and a sense of social responsibility. By working with local organisations such as Launceston Food Bank, pupils are learning how they can play a positive role in their communities.”
