Stratton Bowling Club has once again opened its gates with this season marking its 80th anniversary.

The first day's play took place on a beautiful brand new green, laid thanks to the endeavour of the members who raised and secured funds. Welcoming honoured guests and fellow members, the President Doreen Pearse described the club as thriving and now one of the biggest in the county.

The discerning eye would have noted the once county champions, national finalists and recent county presidents amongst the crowds of patrons gathered to welcome each other and new members alike. As if the lush new turf and warm welcome was not enough, those finding the game a novel experience are further spoilt with low membership costs and free coaching.

The seemingly endless generosity of the club was not lost on those at the clubhouse bar. Now that the new green has rectified the once infamous slope, the eight inch difference was rued by a smiling club secretary.

Bruce Peardon, point of contact for potential members (01288 356253) noted: "We have given away our home advantage," showing that Stratton Bowling Club's loss is everybody's gain.
