THE Week St Mary Revel started with excellent weather for the gathering of the harvest queen’s procession, where most unusually, two harvest queens were welcomed, twins Jade and Zara Turner.

Each queen had their own entourage of two young attendants and a page boy crown bearer, and they all travelled in great style on a harvest carriage towards their crowning ceremony in Week St Mary Church.

The procession was led by Rev Tony Windross and Mrs Pat Windross, closely followed by Launceston Town Band who added a wonderful, professional touch to the handsome marching tunes that they played to accompany the parade.

Then came Citizen of the Year 2016, Mr Len Davies and his driver Mr Francis Rowe, in a splendid open top car, with a large crowd of families, fancy dress entrants and onlookers carrying the flags and banners that have become so much of a tradition on this occasion.

When the procession reached the church, the new queens were led into the church by last year’s page boy Harry Banks, with the 2015 attendants Amelia Banks and Brooke Hannaford and Miss Mollie Webster, the retiring harvest queen.

The 2016 harvest queen, Miss Jade Turner, was accompanied by attendants Yvie Tilley and Lilly Sharland, and her crown bearer was Finley Carter.

Harvest queen Miss Zara Turner was accompanied by her attendants Charlotte Sharland and Pamela Morrison, and crown bearer Kory Carter.

The church was full for the crowning ceremony, conducted by the Rector, Rev Windross, with Mrs Audrey Bennett on the organ.

Afterwards there was a Revel Fair at the parish hall, where everyone joined in various games, stalls and activities to raise funds for the Revel Fund, which is shared between the church and chapel.

The first duty of the harvest queens was to present the prizes to the fancy dress winners, who had already been judged by Len Davies.

At 4pm the parish hall was opened for a grand public tea, which was very well received. Thanks have been extended to all the ladies who worked so hard to serve food and drinks and to clear up afterwards.

In the evening the hall was transformed into a rock concert venue when the girl group ‘Vanity’ played to a large crowd, who continued eating and drinking at the hog roast and bar until late into the evening.

Thanks are also due to the parish hall committee for organising a series of events in the week before Revel to get the community in the mood for the celebrations.

These included painting, colouring and literary competitions, a miniature gardens competition, produce show and a bake off contest, plus a barn dance, a concert from the Smokey Mountain Boys, a skittles evening, a football and barbecue session and a coffee morning.
