THERE was a record attendance of 5,000 at the Countryman’s Fair in Werrington Park on Sunday, August 7.

Visitors of all ages enjoyed a diverse range of main ring attractions, including a stupendous display by Jamie Squibb, the daredevil motorcycle stunt rider. Gasps of appreciation accompanied his extraordinary performance.

Also on show this year was Jonathan Marshall the falconer, with his beautiful black stallion who appears in the Lloyds bank advertisements. Additionally, Chris Green the wild fowler, Neil Varney with his gundogs, the Side Saddle Association, who created a First World War reenactment scene, the Tetcott and Lamerton Hunts and the ever popular Bideford Youth Pipe Band all contributed to the Fair’s line up.

Sportsmen went for the clay shooting competitions; the less experienced could have lessons with BASC or fishing with Westcountry Rivers Trust and archery with Elmtree Archers.

Dog owners enjoyed the gundog working tests and scurry competition, the Family Dog Show and the Hound Show.

There were over 150 trade and craft stands, including a food market and cooking demonstrations by the head chef of the Arundell Arms.

A number of local charities and organisations will benefit from this excellent day out for all the family, including Westcountry Rivers Trust and Werrington Cricket Club.

Show secretary, Jenny Smith, said: “The committee are most grateful to Mike Williams of Werrington Park for making his beautiful estate available for the day.”
