BUDE’S runners are lacing up their shoes, filling their water bottles, and tightening their vests as they prepare to show what they’re made of all while raising money for a local cause.
On Sunday, November 16, Bude-based charity, Talan’s Trust will be hosting its ninth annual Tal19, a 19km race which sees runners push themselves as they traverse some of the most beautiful sights that Bude has to offer.
Starting from Bude surf club, the run goes past Talan's childhood home, before heading to some of the places he loved, both Stratton and Budehaven schools, football and rugby club, where the talented samba band Energia will be putting a bounce in the stride of every runner, and then over the fields by the Weir, the second panoramic view of the Atlantic, past the Bay View where Talan used to eat his favourite Sunday roast and up on the cliffs to the sound of the crashing sea, before heading back over the canal, past the tennis club and back to the surf club where Talan spent so much of his time.
Talan’s Trust was set up after Talan Penny, an 18-year-old Bude local who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), a type of soft tissue sarcoma that grows in active muscles of the body, sadly passed away. The trust now carry out a number of awareness and fundraising campaigns in aid of those with the same condition.
With runners doing their bit to rise funds and awareness for the cause, they will be cheered on by the trust’s marshals who stand out in blowy conditions, offering enthusiastic encouragement to runners. As well as this, runners will be followed by members of the local bike club Dept26 making sure everyone is on course and no one gets left behind! Upon completion, participants will be met with cheering supporters and a medal, and once they’ve recovered, a bowl of hot soup and as much cake as they can eat will be waiting for them.

Sarah Penny, from Talan’s Trust explained: “On the day of the run we have the 19km a 10km and pairs option as well as a fun run for under 17's, the latter can be entered on the day as well as on line.
“You can also enter the ‘ANYHOW/ANYWHERE’ option online, which is what it says, you can do the 19km any way you like; swim it, walk it, skip it, cycle it or come up with your own ideas, and this can be done wherever you live. Last year we had people in Switzerland, America and Australia take part. You have the rest of November to take part and you'll get a medal in the post too.
“We do hope we will see some of you there again either running or cheering the runners on.
“Talan's Trust raise money for the Institute of Cancer Research but our passion is to raise awareness of childhood cancer which tragically remains the biggest disease cause of death amongst children in the UK.”
