Audrey and Lawrence Wheatley of Lower Upton, Bude, celebrated their 60th (Diamond) Wedding Anniversary recently. The couple met in 1947 when teaching in adjacent boys and girls secondary schools in Norbury, south London. They lived near Stockwell for their first five years and then in Welwyn Garden City, where Lawrence taught in the original secondary modern school for 30 years. After taking eight years off until both of their children had reached school age, Audrey taught remedial English until her retirement when they moved to Cornwall. The couple have participated actively in many community projects and events throughout their so-called 'retirement.' Lawrence was the last chairman of the North Cornwall branch of the Burma Star Association and is currently Standard Bearer and newsletter writer of North Cornwall branch of the RAFA (Royal Air Force Association). Audrey was a founder member of the Bude Canal Association and has been their chairman for some years and Lawrence edits the newsletter. Their children, grandchildren, partners and other relatives who for generations have spent many happy holidays in Bude were invited by Philip and Wendy Wheatley, son and daughter-in-law, to enjoy a slap-up celebratory meal at the excellent Elements restaurant just outside Bude. Alison Cox, niece and god-daughter to Audrey, said: "Auntie Audrey and Uncle Lawrence are totally amazing; full of life, energy and fun! None of us can believe that they are both well into their 80s. They are keenly interested in everything we all get up to, enjoy life to the full and are a huge inspiration to everyone who is afraid of growing old!"
