STUDENTS and staff at Callington Community College were in full celebration mode on GCSE results day, after they secured the highest set of results ever seen at the College.

53% of students gained Grade 5 and above in English and Maths - A measure known as ‘strong basics’ which typifies access to Level 3 pathways. Furthermore, 70% of students gained Grade 4 and above in English and Maths, referred to as ‘standard basics’, which again grants access to a multitude of opportunities beyond GCSEs.

Mrs Wendy Ainsworth, Principal of the College commented; “We are absolutely super proud of our student cohort. They had such determination and a great work ethic, but moreso, their humour, their empathy and their enthusiasm and commitment was just legendary. Whilst it is terrific to earn headline figures like this, what truly matters is that our young people have earned results they can be very, very proud of.”

Mrs Ainsworth smiled as she recalled, “they would see me around the College and smile and say ‘we’re locked in Miss!’ and they were! We had a classful three evenings a week for months committed to completing past papers, watching revision videos or just seeking our support. Their work ethic and ambition was exemplary.”

There are so many results that deserve special mention, a few include: Rowan Carne with 5 Grade 9s and 4 grade 8s across all of his subjects; Pippa Dyter with 5 Grade 9s and a grade 8; Olly Ferguson with 3 grade 9s, 2 8s and a distinction star; Isabelle Gribble with 3 grade 9s, 2 8s and a distinction star also; Sam West with 5 grade 9s and 3 grade 8s across his subjects. Further to this Leila Kempe earned 2 grade 9s in art and photography, Niamh Sharp Phillips gained 9s in English Literature and Psychology, Bethany Swinburne gained 9s in chemistry and maths. Jacob Garratt gained grade 9 in biology and chemistry. Lillie Every also gained 2 grade 9s in geography and music.

Mrs Mo Inger, assistant principal at the college said “we are thrilled in so many ways with the results. This year also represents the highest number of grade 9s earned and the highest number of students earning grades at Grade 7 and above (7 being the equivalent of an old A grade).”

Mr Adam Murray, the head of Year 11 added: “They absolutely deserve these successes. They’ve happened because of the work they have put in and because of their relentless effort and positivity. I am so proud of them all and can’t wait to see what they do next.”

The College added that it was really grateful to the staff and parents and wider community who all supported to make this the best year ever.

Mrs Ainsworth added: “This really was a team effort. Everyone understood how important it was to Year 11 that they had quiet spaces to study, materials to revise and learn from and kindness and humour to support the stress and strain of all that work. It takes a true commitment and resolve from everyone to earn results like this. I will be forever grateful to everyone who made this possible.”
