PUPILS from Launceston got the chance to get up close and personal with firefighting equipment thanks to a visit to Launceston Fire Station.

Children in foundation class at St Stephens Community Academy enjoyed an exciting and action-packed visit to Launceston Fire Station, joined by pupils from Lewannick Primary School, as part of their ‘people who help us’ topic.

During the visit, the station’s 7.4 fire crew members gave the children a fascinating demonstration of how quickly they put on their protective gear, with everyone amazed at just how heavy it is. The crew spoke about the vital work they do during emergencies and reminded the children of the importance of dialling 999 if help is ever needed, highlighting how community involvement plays a crucial role in keeping everyone safe.

The visit was packed with valuable life skills, shared so brilliantly by the local firefighters. The children learned about ‘test it Tuesday,’ a weekly reminder to check smoke alarms at home and discovered how keeping bedroom doors closed at night can help protect families if a fire starts. These practical safety messages reinforced the importance of working together as a community to look after one another.

Children even got to sit in the fire engine during their visit (Submitted)

Maura Furber, executive headteacher at the school said: “There was plenty of excitement as the children explored both fire engines and even had the chance to sit in the back. The highlight of the day was spraying the fire hose — an unforgettable experience. Throughout the visit, our Foundation class were fantastic Confident Communicators, listening carefully, asking thoughtful questions, and sharing thoughtful ideas.

“A huge thank you goes to Launceston Community Fire Station for their outstanding community involvement and for sharing such important life skills with the children, as well as a special thank you to Miss Wonnacott from St Stephens for organising this wonderful experience for both schools.”
