BUDE Metric Brass held a joint concert with the Torpoint Lady Singers to raise funds for ‘Mind’, the mental health charity, on Saturday, November 14.

The idea for the concert came from a friend of the band and singers, who had seen how mental health could touch anyone.

Despite appalling weather the concert was well attended and the charity will benefit from about £350 once all the suppliers have been paid.

The band programme featured some old favourites like ‘Calling Cornwall’, which was the opening sequence for BBC Radio Cornwall, and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’.

Two pieces specially arranged by band members had their first airing at the concert. The music from the Disney film ‘Frozen’ — ‘Let it Go’ was arranged by Marcus Nicholls, and an arrangement of ‘Godspell’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ was arranged by musical director Colin Gay, who said he had never felt more nervous when conducting a piece of music.

Torpoint Lady Singers kept with the modern theme with the Barry Manilow favourite ‘One Voice’, and the more traditional ‘Skye Boat Song’.

Torpoint Lady Singers were founded in 1987 with an enthusiastic group of eight ladies. The choir now has 30 or so members, meeting socially as well as for fundraising activities.

Over the years almost £45,000 has been raised for local and national charities.

Under the expert guidance of the musical director, Sylvia Fraser and talented accompanist Sue Westwell, the choir builds on a substantial repertoire, ranging from songs from the past to some more popular items. This year their annual 12-hour ‘Singathon’ for Sarcoma raised more than £2,000.

Bude Metric Brass are no strangers to charity concerts, having hosted seven Band Together concerts, raising thousands of pounds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer and Cornwall Air Ambulance.

The eighth concert will be on February 20 2016, with the Friends of Bude Sea Pool replacing Breakthrough as a beneficiary.
