A CLUB celebrating all things fast and furious is set to mark 40 years of racing.
In 1986, North Cornwall Motor Racing Club was established, giving a home to some of the area’s speed-seeking petrol heads at Trevillett near Tintagel.
A year after the club’s inception, in 1987 the club moved to rent a field at Lewdown and raced there before eventually having the funds to purchase their own piece of land at Netherbridge just outside Launceston.
Following on, it took almost a year of planning the move to Netherbridge and the first race meeting was held on Easter Monday 1999.
Since then, the club has been thriving, cultivating a dedicated community of motor racing enthusiasts. The club is run entirely by volunteers, with Irene Guymer leading the group while sitting as chairperson for the past 14 years - with a lot of help from husband Steven.
Now, the club is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
Speaking to the Post, Irene said: “The club has gone from strength to strength in that time purchasing all their own machinery and facilities - to be self sufficient - and to give everyone a great days entertainment.
“On average there are 70 to 80 cars racing across the different categories.”
The club also offers the opportunity for the region’s future racing stars to get their start behind the wheel, welcoming drivers as young as 12 to race in either of the Junior Hot Rods and Junior Bangers categories.
“Many of these youngsters then move into adult classes at 16 and we now have some third generation racers,” said Irene.
The club is a non profit making organisation, and has been consistently providing North Cornwall residents with their racing fix since its inception, with Covid restrictions being the only incident to thwart racing plans.
“The clubs 40th celebration weekend along with our friends the tractor pullers will be held on June 27 and 28,” said Irene. “It is also the Rookie Team event and Saturday will seeing us holding a social gathering in a marquee with live music, bar and hog roast.
“As a club we would like to invite past and present members, their friends and families to celebrate with us from 7pm to midnight.
“We would also like to extend our thanks to all the drivers who have supported us over the years and will hopefully continue to do so. Thanks also to their families and supporters and the local community who come to watch racing come rain or shine. Also to extend thanks to our loyal businesses who support us along the way.”
Admission prices are £15 for adults, £7 for children, with under 5s free and family tickets at £40.
