STUDENTS have been getting inspired following a visit from a local sporting legend.

Pupils at Jacobstow Community Academy were treated to an inspiring visit from long-distance swimmer Lowenna North, whose story of determination and resilience captivated the entire school community.

At the end of 2024, Lowenna, from Tregadillett, successfully swam the English Channel—a gruelling 20.5-mile journey from Dover to Calais. However, now she is passing on her wisdom in an effort to inspire the next generation of swimmers.

On this journey, Lowenna recently paid a visit to Jacobstow Community Academy to share her experience and encourage children to pursue their dreams.

A spokesperson from the school added: “Her message aligned perfectly with Jacobstow’s ethos: to help every child grow, flourish, and achieve the extraordinary.’

In a whole-school assembly, Lowenna delivered a powerful talk on the value of hard work and resilience. Her words resonated with pupils and staff alike, reminding everyone that with determination, anything is possible.

Year 5 and 6 pupils, later had the opportunity to interview Lowenna, asking thoughtful questions about her training, motivation, and the challenges she faced.

Mrs Ubly, P.E lead at Jacobstow, said: “Lowenna’s visit was a wonderful opportunity for our children to hear first-hand how ambition and effort can lead to extraordinary achievements. Her story will stay with them for a long time.”

Michelle Jones, headteacher added, “We are incredibly grateful to Lowenna for taking the time to visit Jacobstow. At our school, we want nothing but the very best for our children and hold high aspirations for them—both for today and for the future. Lowenna is a truly inspirational role model, showing our pupils that with determination and self-belief, they can achieve extraordinary things.”

The visit not only raised the profile of sport within the school but also left pupils feeling motivated to set goals and work towards them.
