THE 12th annual Community Actions Through Sports awards evening was recently hosted at the Parkhouse Centre in Bude on Thursday, May 26, with 83 young people being recognised and rewarded for their positive community action, equating to 2,657 volunteer hours and over £6,605 being raised for local and national charities.

The audience was treated to performances from the Budehaven steel band, Steelhaven, and jazz band, under the expert guidance of Bethany Wade, as well as the Year seven and eight Dance Group, inspired by Clare Collingham.

The hosts, Denise May and Martin Reay welcomed the guest presenters for the evening, Eva Pascoe and Cassie Patten.

Eva is the U14 Welsh Dry Ski Slope champion, the U14 British champion and winner of the U14 GBR Outdoor Series. She also trains on artifical snow and competes during the winter in the Alps, which is commendable considering she is a Year eight student from Callington Community College.

Cassie is an Olympic bronze medalist, double world silver medalist, European cup champion, swimming world cup winner and a great supporter of Bude Sea Pool.

Eva presented the School category, includ­ing Tilly Dumbleton and Poppy Jennings for their support manning the Budehaven garden stall. Jasmine Wallis and Max Busby were also recognised for support­ing numerous school events, and Max was later commended for his role with the army cadets.

Additionally, Kelsey Wosnitzka, Emma Fanet, Charlie Butler, Tiegan Goodedge, Amber Sobey and Emily Medland were awarded for their support to the Haven student management group.

The Bude infant school students were nominated for their work as year 2 school councillors. Level 2 winners were Amelia Jones; Leo Carrington; Caitlin Rees and Rowan Alexander.

Stratton primary school nominated some of their year 6 children, part of a group who volunteered to distribute the school milk at playtime. Level 2 winners were Sian White, Cara Walker, Danni Garrett, Izzy Garrett, Nitalia Jacquett, Natalia Tilly, Kacie Cornish and Jade Goatcher.

Level 4 winners were Thomas Trick, Laurie Marriott and Liam Drewery, who have been an exceptional technical team.

Thomas Marples has been an exceptional help and addition to the music department at Budehaven. He was also musical director for the Bude Youth Theatre production of ‘The last train to Bude...?’

Nominated by Bude Junior School for their fundraising efforts were Cal Newberry, Raffay Rowland and Iona Rowland, who joined together to initiate their own sponsored swim, raising over £200 for Sport Relief. Lottie Hinson, Ben Varcoe, Ellie Mallard, Olivia Gregory, Poppy Luxton and Charlie Bird collated fundraising ideas for Children in Need and Sport Relief, raising over £2,500 through a whole host of activities.

Maizie and Poppy Bennett have been instrumental in initiating activities to raise awareness and money for childhood leukaemia, especially in the case of their younger brother Ben, and Mille Miles raised £56 at the Pendeen car boot sale for the Dr Hadwen Trust.

Level 4 winners were Chantelle Broad, who raised money for cancer research; Ella Henry-Brock, who completed a 5km taplin in aid of Bude Sea Pool and Bude Nippers raising £1,415; Anna Harper, who independently supported the Bude Junior School charity fundraising initiatives, raising over £250 through her own fundraising efforts. Sean Giles was inspired to raise money for CLIC Sargent for a young man called Kai Laidlaw, raising £290.

Samuel and Poppy Jennings were also recognised for their incredible efforts, and were wished luck on their venture — a 141 mile Coastal walk in aid of Talan Penny, Ben Bennett and CLIC Sargeant (see report page 2).

Cassie presented awards in the Wider Community category. Paige Cornish, Sakira Bevan and Tyler Harris as the outstanding junior organising committee for Friday Night Splash helped by Jack Rowe who were congratulated for their commitment.

Sakira was also recognised for taking her level 3 paediatric first aid course, which she passed with flying colours. Robert Fitzpatrick and Katie Ackford were recognised for their support at Bude Workclub; Bethany Hiatt as a regular volunteer at Tamar Lakes Park run, acting as an assistant timekeeper and tail runner.

Level 2, 3 and 4 winners were Jaik Payne, who has supported Morwenstow Comm­unity Centre fundraising events for more than three years; Mia Chalkley has also joined forces and supported a number of events; Sam Munday is an active member of Bude Waveriders and Bude Football Club, helping others and always with a big smile on his face; Carley Marie Inch, Bude Town Band, attends all practices and plays in the full band at concerts, being comm­itted to many community events.

Another committed band member is James Moyers, chairman of St Gennys silver band for four years, and music librarian at Bude metric brass.

Lochy Laurenson has achieved an incredible amount at cub scouts, gaining the highest level possible, supporting his fellow cubs, and being very helpful towards his team leaders.

Elizabeth Hobbs was presented with the Young Ambassador trophy by Margaret Frost, for all her work over her two years in office.

Bude Army Cadet Force were nominated by their Sergeant for their collection for poppies, selling them annually and make a considerable sum of money that goes to Help for Heroes.

Level 3 winners were Kai Gordon, Bailey Cook, James Quinton, Charlie Robinson, George Martin, Tiffany Richardson, Destiny Manktelow, Daniel Smith, Bradley Ruff, Jimmy Snelgrove, Lucas Whatley, Mary Ann Broad, Tom Hingley, Sam Tasker, Jack Sillifant, Charles Pugh, Reece Osbourne, Callum Moore, Jo Szanislo, Owain Handley, Molly Martin, Andrew Lawson, Max Busby and Alex Ellmer.

Jack Shorland was nominated for his outstanding work sup­port­ing Widemouth Task Force Environmental Group in the Environ­ment category.

Stean Shepherd, Level 5 winner was nominated for his work coaching basketball to numerous Budehaven students and in the community.

Level 3 winners were Chloe Rookes and Maddie Weston, not only strong committed members of the local gig club, but fully committed to the Budehaven indoor rowing team, setting up the rowing machines, supporting other students, leading training sessions and generally being superstar rowing leaders.

Level 2 winner, Mia Hodgson, was recognised for playing an active part in helping at netball club in St Mark’s primary school, which she left last year.

Bude SLSC nominated Level 5 winner Ella Henwood, who has shown extreme maturity in delivering the surf lifeguard award, a vocational qualification, to numerous members of the club. Not only does she deliver her own courses, but also assesses courses delivered by other trainers, at both Bude and other clubs.

The final award of the evening was to the 2016 Outstanding Young Person of the Year, which was presented by Samuel Jennings and Eva and Cassie.

This year there were joint winners, Stean Shepherd and Ella Henwood, both outstanding and inspirat­ional young people who have made such a difference to so many other young people.
