AFTER two agonising near misses, Liskeard Athletic will finally secure promotion to the Western League Premier Division tomorrow morning if they win at neighbours Dobwalls (11am).
The Blues have racked up 22 wins and two draws from their 25 outings, and a pair of 1-0 wins over nearest challengers Elburton Villa, coupled with the Plymothians’ recent defeat to Camelford, means the title race will be over with Darren Gilbert and Wayne Gamble’s side still having two matches remaining.
Elburton will finish second at the very least and put fifth-placed Callington to the sword on Tuesday night in a 5-0 victory, which included a hat-trick from promising youngster Blake Colton. They make the short trip over the Tamar Bridge to mid-table Millbrook who will look to try and break into the top half over the final weeks.
The race for third is a fascinating one with Penzance currently in pole position, closely followed by in-form Camelford and Callington.
Penzance host a St Day side they were shocked by on Boxing Day, while Cally also start as firm favourites when they host strugglers Launceston. Wadebridge Town are the visitors to Camelford for the River Camel derby and although in mid-table, won’t be short of motivation having twice lost to Bobby Hopkinson’s side this term.
At the bottom, Dobwalls are two adrift of Launceston who are the same number behind St Day.
Falmouth Town Reserves have enjoyed an excellent first season following promotion and face a derby clash with Wendron United.
Falmouth would love a draw between Holsworthy and Bude Town at Upcott Field with a victory for the visitors moving them level with the Magpies.
For Holsworthy, who recently reached the Devon St Luke’s Bowl final, they ran Liskeard mightily close on Tuesday night and go into the game in good form.
They will also be looking to play much better than they did on Boxing Day when Dylan Morgan’s brilliant late winner gave the Seasiders a 1-0 success.
There are also two games on Monday afternoon.
Launceston – who have plenty of home fixtures remaining and lots of teams around them to face - host Wendron, while Bude, whose remaining outings are all away from Broadclose, make the long trip to St Day’s excellent ground at Vogue Park.
Good Friday fixtures (11am unless stated): Callington Town v Launceston, Camelford v Wadebridge Town, Dobwalls v Liskeard Athletic, Holsworthy v Bude Town, Millbrook v Elburton Villa, Penzance v St Day (midday).
Easter Saturday (3pm): Falmouth Town Reserves v Wendron United.
Easter Monday (3pm): Launceston v Wendron United, St Day v Bude Town.
