CAMELFORD booked their place into the quarter-finals of the Cornwall Senior Cup after defeating Bude Town 4-1 at Broadclose Park on Tuesday night (November 18).

The home side fell behind three minutes into the game after Ryan Downing’s cross found Liam Higgins to give the Camels the perfect start.

Bude, who were struggling to get any sort of foothold in the game during the first half, were punished twice more by goals from Downing and Jacob Ham to give the away side a commanding 3-0 lead going into the break.

The second half saw an improved display from Bude who reduced the deficit through a terrific 30 yard free kick from Finn Reeve.

Any chance of a fightback however were thwarted after Camelford notched up a fourth goal with Downing getting his second after an unfortunate error at the back.

After the match, Camels boss Bobby Hopkinson said: “It was a game of two halves. Their pitch was really good so fair play to them, but it was more of a tale of the wind. The wind was going straight down one side of the pitch to the other so whichever team had the wind on their side would go and capitalise.

“We went with the wind in the first half and we were relentless, they couldn’t get out of their own third and tried playing from the back which I thought they would. We played a high line and really penned them in and we probably should have taken more chances. I know it’s 3-0 at half time but we still need to capitalise on those chances you create.”

“I don’t think we ever looked like we were going to lose or let them back in the game despite their goal. They had a 5 to 10 minute spell when they scored the goal but other than that I think we were still on top. As a team we effectively did our jobs and pressed from the front.”

The Camels make their way into the next round were they will be joined by Mousehole, Newquay, Saltash United, St Blazey, Dobwalls, Penzance and Sticker in the last eight.

Looking to the cup draw, Bobby added: “The lads are looking for a good draw, hopefully we can stay away from the likes of Mousehole and Newquay. If we can stay away from those two teams, then I think that the other teams in the draw are beatable.

“But saying that, I’m not going into it with the expectations of going through to the next round, you just take each game as it comes. We’ve definitely built some momentum and it’s all coming together at the minute.”

Camelford have a weekend off before being back in action on Saturday, November 29 to face Holsworthy.

Looking ahead to the game at Upcott Field, Bobby concluded: “It’s a difficult place to go to because the pitch is quite small. It doesn’t allow us to use our strengths in respects of getting the wingers on the ball and our wide players on the ball.

“It’s more of a battle in that sense and Holsworthy have started the season well. I’m looking forward to that test and our lads have definitely got to turn up to that one as well.”
