Premier Division

Cullompton Rangers 1

MIKE Kempthorne’s deflected effort gave the Camels a much needed boost as they earned their first point of the year.

Reg Hambly’s men hadn’t played since January 26 when they lost 3-0 at Millbrook and it showed in the opening 20 minutes as the East Devon side bombarded the visitors’ backline.

They eventually went ahead through Rhys Parsons but Camelford gradually worked their way into the match before the break.

The second-half was much more even with both sides having more than a dozen shots in total and the Camels grabbed a fantastic point as Kempthorne’s 20-yard shot found its way in.

Having stopped the rot, Camelford will hope for a first win in 13 attempts on Saturday when they mke the short trip to fellow strugglers Launceston (3pm).

Exmouth Town 3

Callington Town 0

DESPITE Callington gaining some early confidence in the opening quarter of the game, as they managed to soak up the home sides pressure and play some good football, they were unable to cope with the new league leaders’ three-goal bombardment and within half-hour the game was set after efforts from Aaron Denny, Ace High and Mark Lever.

Although they played well in patches, Callington’s afternoon was summed up in the 71st minute as they failed to convert a penalty. Callington welcome Elburton Villa to Ginsters Marsh on Saturday (3pm).

Launceston 0

LAUNCESTON put in their best performance of 2019 at Erme Valley on Saturday, but still went down 3-0 at Ivybridge Town.

The Clarets started brightly and competed well throughout a scrappy first-half, devoid of clear-cut opportunities. The energetic Cameron Webb set up Callum Watson for Launceston’s best chance, but the midfielder saw his shot blocked by veteran home keeper Martin Piper.

Returning skipper Lee Rundle helped organise his defence to such a degree that Ivybridge, on a great run of six league wins from their last eight games, failed to trouble Clarets keeper Tom Watson before the break.

However, for the third consecutive game, the Clarets were caught cold and conceded two goals in the opening minutes of the second-half.

Ivybridge debutant Connor McCauley broke through a flimsy offside trap to open the scoring in the 53rd minute and immediately afterwards the experienced Kelvin Fyneboy turned neatly and fired past Watson.

From a promising half-time position, the Clarets had a mountain to climb.

Launceston continued to push but the finish was lacking. Mike Burke’s effort, at the end of an excellent move, was blocked on the line, while Tom Savigar dragged his shot wide when he looked sure to hit the target.

The game had opened right up and Watson made a stunning double save to deny the dangerous McCauley while Savigar saw a good effort touched wide for a corner.

But the home team sealed a flattering victory when substitute Sam Stevens rammed a 90th minute shot past the helpless Watson and in off the far post.

The Clarets will keep fighting and look forward to welcoming local rivals Camelford to Pennygillam on Saturday (2.15pm).

Division One (West)

Bude Town 1

Plymstock United 0

SCOTT Percy’s first-half winner gave Bude a thoroughly deserved victory over the top-six chasing visitors at Broadclose Park.

The Seasiders looked to be in control for most of the game and were rewarded for their dominant display, as in the 40th minute Percy broke away from the defence and cut in brilliantly from the left-hand side, to place the ball into the bottom corner.

United were unable to cause any trouble to the home side, who controlled the second-half just as well as they did in the first. Bude will hope to emulate their impressive performance when they travel down to Penzance in their next Division One (West) fixture.

St Blazey 0

Holsworthy 2

TWO first-half goals meant Holsworthy finally got their February started with a comfortable victory at Blaise Park.

The Magpies have impressed this season and had secured their victory within the first quarter of the match. They took the lead in the 12th minute after James Dart cut the ball back across the box, which then deflected into the St Blazey net off an unexpecting defender.

Holsworthy’s early lead was then doubled just eight minutes later, after the ball was put into the box and was poked in at the near post by Dom Abbott. St Blazey almost got back into the game after a well hit free-kick struck the woodwork, but the Magpies came off unscathed to secure the clean sheet and most importantly, all three points. Holsworthy will hope they can replicate this performance on their home turf on Saturday, (3pm) as their next opponents, St Dennis are nine points above them.
