LAUNCESTON ended their 2018/19 away programme with a performance and result typifying so much of their season on Good Friday as they fell to a late 3-2 defeat at Callington Town.

The Clarets made the short trip down the A388 keen to end a difficult season on an upbeat note. Influential midfielder Callum Watson was unavailable, with the versatile Sam Hepworth stepping in, but otherwise the side was unchanged from Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Godolphin.

On a flat, hard surface the game began slowly with both sides struggling to build meaningful possession.

The deadlock was broken after 37 minutes. Mike Lucas ran from midfield before drifting right and finishing neatly across Clarets keeper Josh Colwill.

The home side gradually assumed control but Launceston came close to levelling things up when Tallan Mitchell drove inches over with the last kick of the first-half.

A quiet game finally burst into life on the hour. Young Clarets striker Travis Skerton dribbled straight through the heart of the home defence and finished with a precise shot beyond Sam Borthwick. It was an outstanding goal, out of context with much of what had gone before.

Things got even better for Launceston a few minutes later. Jack Lee, a constant threat down the left, escaped his marker and fired over an accurate cross which top scorer Jordan Walton turned home from close range.

The Clarets needed to settle, regroup and defend their hard-earned lead. Unfortunately it lasted just seven minutes. A Charlie Hardcastle defensive header dropped short leaving Colwill marooned. Harry Eaton was left alone to head into an empty net and level the score at 2-2.

The Clarets had an immediate chance to go back in front but Mitchell drove wide of the far post from ten yards. It proved an expensive miss as the home side grabbed a controversial 85th minute winner.

Colwill looked to be impeded as he contested a right-wing corner with the experienced Ryan Lucassi who nodded the ball home from close range. The referee appeared to penalise the Callington man but having checked with his linesman, awarded the goal. The home side closed out the game with few alarms and Launceston had lost a game they could have won and certainly shouldn’t have lost.

The Clarets have one last chance to end a frustrating season on a positive note when Sticker visit Pennygillam on Easter Monday morning.

Bude Town 0

Holsworthy 3

HOLSWORTHY put in the perfect derby-day performance as their penultimate league match of the season ended with an excellent 3-0 victory at Bude Town.

The opening exchanges were dominated by the visitors with skipper Carlo Chandler going close before his centre-back partner Lee Gardiner played in Joe Barker for the opener on 18 minutes.

Holsworthy then dropped off, which allowed the Seasiders the chance to regroup and Harry Hopcroft forced a good save from Ryan Chadwick.

The Magpies then got playing again as Harry Barrett, Chandler, Barker and Dom Abbott all went close forcing Gary Dinshaw into saves.

The second-half started in the same fashion with the brilliant Dinshaw keeping Bude alive.

At 1-0 Town were always in the game and nearly forced a leveller on the hour as they broke from a Holsworthy corner. Scott Percy cut in from the left forcing Chadwick into a fine save. Ruan Tape thought he had a tap-in to score only to see Chadwick up quickly to block his shot.

The let off sparked Holsworthy back into life. Shaun Jones beat three men before playing in Barker on a one-on-one. But again Dinshaw was to the rescue as he was from efforts from Chandler, Abbott, Gardiner and Taren Stacey.

Adam Smith came on and with his first touch forced Dinshaw into another block. His second however saw him rob Josh Allen of the ball, go through on goal and smash the ball home.

Bude couldn’t get out of their half as Barker, Stacey and sub Max MacDonald could have scored and Chandler forced Dinshaw into a fine stop.

This was the last derby for a while as Holsworthy move up next season to Step Six with Bude staying at Step Seven in the new league restructure.

Carlsberg South West Peninsula League

Launceston 2

Sticker 1

TALLAN Mitchell scored the winner from the penalty spot as the Clarets brought down the curtain on their 2018/19 season in the best possible fashion at Pennygillam on Monday, with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over basement club Sticker.

Despite a number of absentees, Launceston were able to field a competitive side and welcomed back the versatile Sam Watts, absent since September.

The game started badly for the home side. Defensive hesitancy allowed former Pennygillam midfielder Bobby Hopkinson the opportunity to nod the visitors in front in the ninth minute.

The Clarets came roaring back, however, and Travis Skerton saw his header beat visiting keeper Ethan Elwell before being cleared off the line. Top scorer Jordan Walton missed a good chance but the equaliser duly arrived in the 20th minute.

The dangerous Jack Lee broke on the left and his fine cross was well controlled and neatly finished by prolific ECPL scorer Marius Pislaru.

The visitors were given a route back into the game when referee James Gallagher judged Launceston full-back Sam Passmore to have fouled Jack Hooper despite minimal contact. However Josh Colwill ensured justice was done when he easily saved the resultant Joel Cockings spot-kick.

The Clarets continued to make, and squander, good chances and the game reached half-time level at 1-1.

Launceston remained dominant after the break but a series of clear chances came and went.

The distinctive figure of Hopkinson, still an excellent striker of the ball, continued to pose a threat from dead-balls and Colwill had to be alert to save a thunderous 30-yard drive.

It was starting to look as if the Clarets dominance would go unrewarded, but in the 73rd minute a lunging tackle by ex-Claret Mickey Rowles-Jane sent Skerton crashing to the ground just inside the area. Tallan Mitchell took responsibility and easily beat Elwell from the spot.

The Clarets saw the game out without too many alarms and should have extended their lead. But a difficult season ended with the Clarets finishing ahead of Callington, Camelford and Sticker in the last-ever SWPL Premier table.

Next season will see Launceston competing, under their fine new floodlights, in the new Carlsberg SWP Premier West league, taking on the top Cornish clubs.
