COUNTIES TWO CORNWALL (LAST WEDNESDAY)

Perranporth 7 Bude 19

Four days after beating Perranporth on home soil, Bude completed the double over their North Coast seaside rivals with a well-deserved victory in the return fixture at The Droop last Wednesday night.

It was a win based on the Seasiders taking their scoring chances when they came and a rock solid defence which for the most part held firm, particularly in the second period after they were reduced to 14 men for the remainder of the match following young winger Oscar Davey receiving a red card for a dangerous tackle.

Despite the Brewers' match squad being similar to the weekend, their intensity and accuracy was at a completely different level from that of the earlier encounter. With an on-shore wind at their backs in the first half, within three minutes they had taken a seven-point lead. From an attacking line-out, the ball was soon fed down the hosts' backline where inside-centre Ben Jones cut through for a well-worked try, with right wing Ash Carter adding the extras.

For much of the remainder of the first quarter Bude were forced to defend.

However, gradually, the visitors came to terms with the pace of the opposition back line and started to create scoring chances of their own. In the 24th minute, inside-centre Edy Hilliam-Cooke made an excellent break up the right flank, and as he was halted deep in the Perranporth 22, scrum-half Ollie Rowlandwas there on his inside shoulder to take the pass and slide in under the uprights. Fly-half Brad Thomas slotted the simplest of conversions for 7-7.

The momentum was now with the visitors and on 36 minutes, after fly-half Jowan Kerry was penalised and yellow-carded for killing the ball at a ruck 15 metres short of his own try line. The resulting penalty award was kicked to touch and from the line-out and ensuing maul, No.8 Fred Saxton drove over from close range. The conversion attempt from Thomas struck a post but they led 12-7.

At the break the scoreline remained unchanged and with the elements in their favour in the second period and still with a one-man advantage, the Seasiders looked to kick on.

However, with the hosts now back up to their full complement, it was now the visitors' turn to earn the referee's displeasure, with Davey dismissed from the field of play on 47 minutes for a mistimed tackle. From that point it was all hands to the pumps for the visitors, who showed remarkable spirit to stand firm. Shortly before the hour mark, following a period of sustained pressure from the Bude pack, flanker Matt Maniglia was on hand to pick up and drive over from close0range. Thomas converted to create some daylight between the sides.

As the game moved into the fourth quarter and towards the final whistle, Perranporth attacked relentlessly and at time desperately, as they sought to gain at least a losing bonus point from the game, but Bude's defence held firm to emergeworthy winners on a testing evening for their young side.
