THE RNLI is urging people to choose a lifeguarded beach over the coming October school half term.

The advice comes after the rescue of a number of surfers on Fistral beach in Newquay recently - and the forecast for large swell on the region’s beaches.

Six beaches across Devon and Cornwall currently have full time lifeguard cover, raising to patrols on 19 over the school half term week (23 to 31 October)

Lewis Timson, RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for Newquay, says,

‘With some mild weather and decent swell, the beaches around the region have remained consistently busy into October. We are expecting even more visitors over the half term week, with many people still staycationing in the south west and locals looking to enjoy the coast before the temperature drops.

“October is one of the best months for surf with the water still relatively warm and more consistent, bigger waves. This week has seen a change in the weather and the arrival of the autumnal strong winds and stormy conditions, accompanied by a sizable swell, increasing the power and likelihood of rip currents.

“For this reason, we’d urge anyone hoping to get into the water check the weather and surf forecasts before you leave so you can make an informed decision and come prepared. If unsure, head to a lifeguarded beach where the teams can advise on the suitability of the conditions.”

Earlier this month on Fistral beach, Newquay, a number of surfers were rescued in quick succession by the lifeguards after getting caught in powerful waves sweeping them towards dangerous rocks at the north end of the beach.

“Even the most skilled surfers and water users can get caught out,” says Lewis.

“Thankfully they had chosen a lifeguarded beach and the team were able to react quickly as soon as they were seen to be struggling. They were all brought back to shore safely.

“If you are ever unsure about anything, go and speak to the lifeguards who can offer important safety advice and information on local hazards. They know these beaches better than anyone and are always happy to help.”

“Anyone swimming or bodyboarding should go between the red and yellow flags where the lifeguards can see you. Those who enjoy walking and exploring the coastline should check the weather forecast and local tide times before setting out, and always carry a means of communication.”

If you need help yourself or if you ever spot anyone else in danger on the coast, always call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard
