Talan’s Trust is a cancer awareness charity which was set up in memory of the late Talan Penny, an 18-year-old Bude local who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer — Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) — a type of soft tissue sarcoma that grows in active muscles of the body. The trust now carry out a number of awareness and fundraising campaigns in aid of those with the same condition.
In 2025, the charity, which is run by Sarah Penny, Talan’s mother, was approached by Annie and Tom Proudfoot from The Bay View Inn at Widemouth Bay wanting to host a fundraiser for the charity. Not wanting to host the usual event, the group got to brainstorming — having gone through the usual ideas, eventually, ‘Talfest’ was born.
The event saw residents come out in force, enjoying a weekend by the coast. Local businesses also got involved, with a number of food vans donating a percentage of their takings to the charity, including 8track rum bar, St Austell Brewery and Korev Bar and Merlin the street performer too.
Drumming up much excitement, the event was a hit, with many, Sarah included, hoping for its return in 2026. Now, the charity has announced that after an incredibly successful maiden year, the event is set to return, for another three-days of family fun.
Once again, this year’s event is returning to its home at the The Bayview, penned to take place from June 12 to 14.
Commenting on the event’s return, Sarah said: “James, Annie and Tom Proudfoot are huge supporters of us at Talan's Trust and enjoyed it so much in 2025 they suggested three days this year. With the best camping field overlooking the sea to boot.”
The event aims to be a family friendly space, featuring crafts and toys for younger attendees, as well as bringing back the popular face painting station from last year.
“We have a fabulous lineup kicking off Friday night with a low key local contingent organised by Spare Peg records,” continued Sarah. “Some up and coming young bands like Elowen as well as more well known singers like James Dixon. Think melodic music, fire pits, friendly chat and getting to know each other!
“On Saturday we have the amazing freshly squeezed who describe themselves as a soul, funk and hip hop band, Feedback who were so great last year, the fabulous Jonah amongst others and ending with Hong Kong Ping pong.”
Finally, Sunday will see the return of Joey the Lips, and Showhawk, who will be putting on a lively show fresh from their stint at Glastonbury.
Sarah says that organisers have endeavoured to keep ticket prices as low as possible in an effort to keep the occasion accessible to all.
She said: “Tickets prices have been kept low as we can in these tricky times so we hope everyone will come and support and make Talfest a huge success.”
