ONE of North Cornwall’s Coastguard teams has looked back on a busy year and thanked the community for its support.
Bude’s team of Coastguards responded to 55 call-outs in 2025.
The team’s first call-out came on January 2, following reports of a person in difficulty in the water at Summerleaze Beach, an early reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the waters along the coastline.
From there, the team’s work didn’t slow down.
A spokesperson from the Bude Coastguard team said: “Since then, we have attended a variety of incidents including dog rescues, cliff rescues, injuries on the coast path, and numerous casualties affected by rip currents at sea. On many of these particular occasions, we have worked closely alongside our friends and colleagues at Bude RNLI Lifeboat and Bude RNLI Lifeguards, and we thank them, as ever, for their consistent professionalism and support.
“Beyond our local area, five members of the team – all qualified flood rescue technicians – were deployed to Monmouth in South Wales as part of the Area 12 Flood Team, supporting emergency response efforts during a period of severe flooding that affected the town.
“Of course, not all of the incidents we attend are visible to the public. Many call-outs, for reasons of sensitivity and privacy, are not shared online, but they remain no less significant to those involved or to the team members who respond. At this time of year, our thoughts are with anyone affected by any incident we have been involved in throughout the year.”
As well as seeing plenty of rescue action, the team also saw a change to some of its members.
A spokesperson continued: “On team affairs, this year we’ve said a very reluctant goodbye to one of our longest-serving Rescue Officers, Bryan Marshall – a valued and much-loved member of the team. We thank Bryan sincerely for his years of service, experience and dedication, during which he played a part in saving many lives. He will be greatly missed!
“While we say goodbye to one, we are pleased to be welcoming two new team members, who are due to formally join the Bude team in 2026. Both have already begun their training, and we look forward to welcoming them fully into the team in the spring.”
Rounding off a busy year, the team has thanked a number of other individuals for their support through the year.
They said: “We’d like to once again pass on our thanks to our flank teams in Boscastle and Hartland for their constant support and professionalism, thanks to to our tireless Area Management Team, and to the crew of the HM Coastguard helicopter at Newquay, who have joined us on several incidents throughout the year.
“Finally, thanks once again to the community of Bude and surrounding areas, for the continued encouragement, understanding and backing you show us throughout the year, especially during the times when it really matters the most. And, as ever, our deepest thanks go to our partners, families and close friends, who accept without question those sudden dashes out of the door when the call comes.”
