A man from Bude has earned the title ‘best carer’ at the Local Hero Awards.

Friday 13th was a good day for Kevin Colwill as he was announced a winner at Pirate FM’s 10th annual Local Hero Awards, held at the prestigious Tregenna Castle Hotel, Carbis Bay, venue for last year’s G7 summit of world leaders.

Kevin won in the carer category. He was nominated by his niece, Michelle Tweed, who said: “Kevin looked after my nan (his mother-in-law) even after his wife died. He showed huge commitment as her sole carer until she died from Alzheimer’s disease two months ago.”

Reflecting on his win, Kevin said: “It was a great night celebrating some wonderful people who’ve shown great courage, overcome adversity and done decades of selfless work for their communities.

“I’d like to thank Pirate FM and the event sponsors. The food and entertainment were fantastic with local comedy legend, Johnny Cowling, bringing the house down at the end.

“It’s lovely that Michelle nominated me and humbling to be the winner. I hope it’s some small recognition for all unpaid carers in Cornwall.”
