Budehaven Community School’s Art department hosted a wonderful evening in celebration of World Earth Day on Thursday, June 9,

The in house gallery ‘BAGS’ The Bistro Art Gallery Space, was alive with great conversations and creative responses around the theme of ‘Only One Earth’ and sustainability.

Rachel Miller, Leader of Learning: Art KS4/5, said: “We enjoyed poetry recital, watched creative films and appreciated a whole range of Art and Photography pieces created by our very talented pupils.

“We were also supported by local artists who are also staff at Budehaven, so it was lovely to be featuring the striking photography of Stu Knowler and beautiful lino cuts of Sarah Szaniszlo. Local artists, Mel Turner and Zoe Arran, were our pop up artist for the evening and really inspired us! Mel’s incredible Sea life dot illustrated surfboards and Zoe’s ring pull accessories really epitomised the values of the exhibition. The very talented Sixth form musicians, Rowan Tidball and Kai Tonks performed their free form jazz vibes and created a wonderful atmosphere!”

Zeb Lillee, one of the sustainable core crew at the school, added: “Thursday night was a great opportunity to hear the thoughts of ecological and environmental experts and visionaries to enable a better future for Bude. Part of this future is the development of the Pearl Bamford garden. It’s fair to say that Pearl still inspires us today!”

The school was also very pleased to welcome visitors Peter Smith from the Bude Climate Partnership, Avril Sainsbury from the Cleaner Seas Group, Richard Smith a local Landscape designer and Adam Russell form the Leola Fields Micro Reserve Project. They all come together to discuss the next steps with The Pearl Bamford Garden, a garden, which will provide a teaching and learning space, focused around sustainability and positive mental health and will serve both the pupils and the local community.

The school is looking forward to contributing to the Bright Futures Festival on Saturday,July 2, where they will have a stall promoting all things sustainable and the wonderful projects that are happening here at Budehaven.
