FOLLOWING local concern a town council has come to an agreement regarding its flag flying policy.

Recently concerns were raised after Pride flags were removed from the poles on Shalder Hill, Bude, to make way for the Union Flag during Armed Forces weekend.

At the most recent full council meeting, Bude-Stratton Town Council voted for a policy which would see the council individually consider flag-flying requests from members or groups from the community.

The meeting saw members of the military and members of the LGBT community come together to show their solidarity for the situation.

Among those who discussed the motion was Chief Petty Officer Craig Brook-Hewitt — who was a part of the first gay marriage to be held on a naval base — who was able to provide his perspective as a serving gay man.

Jamie Wareham, LGBT activist and Bude resident, also spoke at the meeting, providing an open letter to councillors from the LGBT community, thanking councillors for the time which had been spent on the issue and expressing that this was an opportunity for Bude to show its true colours as a place of inclusivity and pride.
