Torridge District Council is supporting 'Second Hand September' by encouraging residents to think twice before buying new clothes and other textiles by embracing the idea of 'Think Before You Throw'.

Each year, the UK generates approximately 1.7 million tonnes of textile waste, of which most could have been recycled or repurposed. Residents can save money, reduce textile waste and help protect the environment by restyling, repairing or repurposing their existing items.

With London Fashion Week taking place this month, it's the perfect time to gain inspiration and create some new, upcycled outfits.

From updating an outfit with accessories and upcycling an item, to simply rediscovering forgotten pieces at the back of the wardrobe - a small change can make a big difference.

Any textiles which are unable to be repurposed or restyled can be donated to local charity shops, clothing banks or collected during Torridge's weekly recycling collection service.

If you have any clothes or textiles that you wish to recycle, simply put them on top of paper in the green collection bag. The council says it accepts clean dry clothes, clean pairs of shoes, duvet and pillow covers, excluding the duvet or pillow, as well as sheets and curtains.

Councillor Chris Leather, lead member for operational services at Torridge District Council said: ''The amount of textiles which are being thrown away is staggering. As a council, we do try to do our bit to help by making it easier for residents to recycle as much as they can by including textiles as part of our roadside collection service.

“September is typically the time when Summer turns to Autumn, and this is when we often find ourselves going through our wardrobes - so, if you find yourself having a sort out and find any unwanted clothes, remember to please Think Before You Throw and put them in your green collection bag.''
