A NORTH Cornwall school has been awarded for its recognition of children’s rights.
St Stephen’s Community Academy in Launceston has been recognised a UNICEF Gold Rights Respecting School.
The award is given to those that ‘have embedded children’s rights through every aspect of school life’. UNICEF explains that it feels the approach ‘enables leaders and teachers to strengthen pupil sense of belonging and voice, and to create an environment for great learning.’
Executive headteacher at the school, Maura Furber has said that the school is ‘absolutely delighted’ to receive the recognition once again.
She said: “This is a reaccreditation, which means we have been assessed again and have maintained our high standard. Gold is the highest level of the award, and it recognises that children's rights are woven into everything we do. It means our children know their rights under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, understand that every child everywhere has the same rights, and show respect for others through the way they learn, play and treat one another.
“It shows in our classrooms, in our assemblies, and in the kindness and confidence of our children every single day.”
Mrs Furber has attributed the award to the hard work of all in and around the school community, including staff, parents, governors and partners, and of course the students.
“This achievement belongs to our whole community,” she continued. “To our children, who live and champion their rights with such pride, thank you. To our dedicated staff, who nurture this culture daily, thank you. And to our wonderful families, governors and community partners, whose support makes all the difference, thank you.
“When one of us shines, we all shine, and today we are shining brightly. Congratulations to everyone at team St Stephens Community Academy.”
