485 New Season Lambs, 126 Draft Ewes and Rams

Similar entry with a lot of leaner lambs on the market which were harder to place and reflected in the over all average of 335ppk.

All the well fleshed lambs very much sought after, numerous pens 350ppk and over to a top of 357ppk for 2 pens of 38kgs at £135.50 from JW Prideaux of Dunsmouth, Bude. Graham Ward of Parsonage Farm, Iddesleigh saw his 42kgs realise 356ppk £149.50.

Messrs S & G Bearns of Bude saw their Texel x 44kg achieve 355ppk at £156. The Luxton family from Venn, Milton Dameral made 353ppk for 45.2kgs £159.50 and SJ Murrin & Sons of New Mills sold 3 pens of 44kgs at 350ppk £154. Top per head was £164 from Rod ward Forda.

Draft Ewes

A few more on offer with again a lot of plain ewes on offer and a flying trade from start to finish and more could have been sold.

Top being £182 for Suffolk x from C White of Northlew, Charolais x ewes to £179 from Mr A Lancaster of Virginstow. There was 8 other pens at £170 and other mules to £150 from Mike Watkins of Little Torrington.

317 Store Lambs

Larger entry and a flying trade with a lot more buyers in attendance. From small to big the overall average was £109.12, top per head was £124 from 3 vendors. A & D King & Partners of Iddesleigh for 3 pens of Texel x , Paul Tythacott of Instow for a Charollais x and A Walter & Son of Putshole, Hartland for Suffolk x . Numerous other pens £118 to £123.

286 Calves and Weaned Calves

A big mid-July entry of 438 calves which sold to a much-improved trade compared to the last fortnight. A huge crowd of buyers with many more farmer buyers out in force. The entry would have largely been made up of young 2–3-week-old rearing types which saw more interest than previous weeks.

Weaned Calves

What a trade! Blue heifers sold to a colossal £950 for a bunch (only 6 months!) in from PF Cleave, Morwenstow with more to £810. Rob Veal of Halwill saw his Blue heifers sell well at £860 & £790 (6m). Blue steers sold well and topped at £915 (6m) for PF Cleave again with others to £900 x4 for Rob Veal.

Milk Calves

Good numbers and a wonderful trade throughout, with plenty of good native bulls over £500.

JC Jenkins & Son of Bradworthy led the way with a super run of Blue bulls reaching a mega £870, £835, and £790. More to £700 John Cann, Highhampton £690 Rob Veal, £670 for PF Cleave and £670 WD Medland, Whitstone and £660 for PJ Martin.

A outstanding Charolais bull made £750 for Wrangworthy Dairy, more to £720 for the Wearing family of Tavistock and £680 for PH Collins, Holsworthy. Best Limousin bulls soared to £780 in from the Wearings again theirs followed by Rachel Skinner, Halwill with thiers at £700 x2 & £680.

Strong Angus bulls up to £750 for a pair from Rob Veale, others to £715 for Russell Risdon, Camelford with 31 Angus bulls averaged £501 with plenty of smalls in the mix. Sweet Blonde Bulls at £630 PH Collins, A single South Devon to £600 for a super sort from PJ Martin, Buckland Filliegh.

Cracking Beef Shorthorn calves at £540 for IJ & EC Dawkins, Hartland. Hereford bulls to £530 for PM & JE Kitto, Looe and also £530 for JC Jenkins.

Heifers sold well and topped out at £710 for a strong part reared sort in from Rob Veale, followed by JC Jenkins with theirs at £700 with 75 Blue heifers averaging £436.

PH Collins had a super run of heifers today with Blondes selling well at £645 and their limousins at £635 and £460. Charolais heifers up to £600 for NJ & KC Bowden, Highhampton with more to £590 Wrangworthy Dairy.

Best Hereford Heifers to £600 for JD & HM Pengelly, Lifton others to £560 x4 for JC Jenkins, young Simmentals to £352 J Sillifant, Pancrasweek. Angus heifers up to £580 for Russell Risdon and Rob Veale.

Dairy Sired Bulls

Superb Fleckvieh bulls topped out at £645 for Wrangworthy Dairy, who sold more to £560 only being very young fresh sorts. Best of the Friesians to £220 fir IJ & EC Dawkins with all 25 Friesian bulls averaging £109.

65 Store Cattle

All steers average £1562, All Heifers £1528.

A wonderful entry of quality stores this week saw another huge crowd of buyers round the ring fiercely bidding for all cattle. Several good consignments of stronger cattle with flesh topped at £2550 for a 18mth Charolais from Mr A S May of Week St Mary who sold other Charolais at £2260.

A cracking run of 14-17mth single suckled Charolais from Mr AM Denford of Holsworthy saw a top of £2240 others at £2190 & £2090, 14mth Limousin steers topped at £2260 for a 22mth Limousin from Messrs G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton.

Other single suckled Limousins from Mr A Bowden of Clawton sold well at £1930 & younger 16mth Limousins to £1900 from Mr AM Denford.

A superb run of young 15- 17mth Dairy x Herefords from Messrs A.R.T Shadrick & Son of Holsworthy raced away at £2210 (2) (17mth) Aberdeen Angus to £1960 from Mr SO Metherell of Welcombe, British Blues in short supply to a top of £2000 for a 23mth steer from Mr AS May of Week St Mary, other grazing type British Blues from Mr EJ Pincombe of Winkleigh at £1930.

Well fleshed heifers saw a huge trade with many bunches having done remarkably well on grass only.

Top of the heifers was £2130 for 2 23mth non-farm assured heifers from Mr AJ Facey of Holsworthy who sold other Simmentals to £1900, British Blues to £1920 for 4 from Messrs G Daniel & Son of North Tamerton and Aberdeen Angus to £1900 for a 25mth heifer from SO Metherell of Welcombe.

Hereford heifers at £1880 from MR AJ Facey of Chilsworthy. 2 larger framed Limousins from MR EJ Pincombe of Winkleigh saw £1870 and 2 young good confirmation 15mth Charolais from Mr AM Denford at £1800.

Younger Stores

Top today was £1610 for a 13mth well farmed Aberdeen Angus steer from Mr Seldon of Ilfracombe whose other Aberdeen Angus sold for £1490 & £1370.

Single suckled Aberdeen Angus heifers from Mr C McWhirter of High Bickington to £1580 (4) others at £1400. Several younger 6-9mth well-bred continentals saw 6mth British Blues from Messrs Wrangworthy dairy at £1210 (2) Fleckvieh steers from the same farm at £1160 and British Blue heifers 6mth at £970.

Young Limousin from Messrs EJ Pincombe & Son from Winkleigh to £1170 other 6-9mth steers at £1010 (5) & Heifers at £1010 (4).

68 Dairy Cattle

A busy market with a very strong trade particularly for cows in milk - which seems to have become the norm.

Cows & heifers sold before the reduction sale of Messrs SW & MA Poad of Saltash sold extremely well topping at £2850 for ‘Littleweir Cyprus Apple’ a freshly calved heifer giving 29Kgs from the well-known ‘Apple’ family, on behalf of J & SW Murch, Umberleigh.

Another super freshly calved heifer ‘Withamhall Mitchell Showdee’ sold at £2800 giving 30Kgs on behalf of P Cleave, Launcells. Top price cow was a 2nd calver at £2700 on behalf of TRD Griffin & Son, Whitstone.

A selection of in calf heifers on behalf of MJ PJ MN CJ RM & RL Hugo of Bodmin due October – January topped at £1650 and averaged at £1300. The same vendor also sold yearling heifers which topped at £1000 for a group of three and averaged £875.

Two pedigree Hereford Bulls both born in 2023 sold on behalf of Martin Dairy LTD, St Mabyn met a very strong trade topping at £3500 for ‘Belowda Owen 668’. ‘Belowda Owen 646’ made £2900.

Two dairy heifers’ calves from NJ & KC Bowden, Highhampton sold to £450 & £420 for 5-week-old heifer calves. The dispersal consignment on behalf Messrs SW & MA Poad, Furslow Farm, Blunts, Saltash sold robotically milked cows & heifers calving from December to July.

Topping the sale was a 2nd calving cow that calved 19th June giving 40Kgs at £3300. Second top price cow was also a 2nd calving cow that calved 14th June realising £3250. Other 2nd calving cows sold to £3200 & £3150.

Top price heifers realised £3000 calving in June followed by two others at £2900 & £2600. The consignment sold to a very solid trade throughout and even the staler cows that calved in the spring met a strong trade particularly for the cows which were producing 40Kgs plus.
