355 New Season Lambs, 40 Draft Ewes and Rams
Smaller entry with the entry being of mixed quality, the young well fleshed lambs much sought after and the leaner lambs harder to place.
Top being 327ppk from 2 Vendors, Chris Ham and daughter of Cloister Hall, Frithelstock for 2 pens of 43kgs £140.50 and Daniel & Parkin of Barnstaple 41.7kgs £136.50.
BR Nancekivell & Son of Pinkhill, Merton saw their 44.6kgs realise 324ppk, £144.50. Top per head on the day was £148.50 for 47kgs from Jim & Richard Hookway of St Giles, Torrington.
Draft Ewes
A lot quieter entry this week after the Quarbani Festival but still a very strong trade. Top of the day was £166 for Suffolk x from Jim & Richard Hookway of St Giles, Torrington.
Charollais x to £166 from Mrs A Turner of Queensland, Marhamchurch who also realised £160 for another. Mules to £145 from Sam Turner of Penleaze, Marhamchurch.
376 Calves & Weaned Calves
Reasonable numbers of calves for the time of year, less buyers but dearer calves with a large number of native calves forward which sold extremely well.
Weaned Calves
Pryor Dairying LTD up from Redruth took the limelight in the weaned calf section with a lorry and drag load which sold to a fantastic trade and have averaged over £200 more then last year.
Top was £705 (3m) for their first bunch of British Blue steers with more to £675 & £655 (3m), Aberdeen Angus steers sold really well to £690 at the same age with more to £655.
British Blue heifers attained some eye watering prices at £700 and £670 and only 3-month-old again and trade of the sale was a big bunch of Aberdeen Angus heifers off the same farm to £665. Hereford steers to £640 and Hereford heifers also selling to £640.
Milk Calves
The best no dearer but sold extremely well again, with the mediums and smalls looking a colossal trade.
Top call in the rearing calf section was for a pair of slightly older well shaped British Blue bulls reaching £800 in from Dave Johns, up from Washaway, other eye catching British Blue bulls to £790 RWH Dilling, £705 A & D Heyward, £700 TWB Hookway, £698 WD Medland and £675 for PH Collins Partnership 62 Blue bulls average £541.
Very smart Limousin bulls to £680, £620 for Jenny Hookway, Roborough followed by Aberdeen Angus bulls which sold to a storming trade and averaged £435 for all 42 forward and topped at £595 for TJ & BE Cowley of Ashwater, with heaps over £500.
Hereford bulls reached £500 for Ross Hedden & Sons up from Weare Gifford, with others to £490 and £465 for J Sillifant of Pancrasweek.
Young fresh Devon bulls made £420, £405 and £365 all in from AH & CJ Sanders up from Liskeard. An unbelievable heifer trade which topped at £705 for a older British Blue heifer in from Dave Johns, younger sorts to £640 for Dave Furse, £620 MJ Hopper, £608 for A & D Heywood and £605 for PJ Wickett & Son of Kilkhampton 49 British Blue heifers average £466.
A super run of silky Limousin heifers raced away to £615, £605, £602 and £590 in presented by Jenny Hookway again. Young, Bonney Charolais heifers not quite so well sold today but still reached £570 for LJ Goaman and others to £500 for J Sillifant, Pancrasweek. A pair of exceptional Simmental heifers presented by the Wearing family, Tavistock reached £600 for their first and £595 for their second.
Hereford heifers very well sought after and sold to £555 for sparky suckler bred sort in from Julian and Judith Smeeth of Morwenstow, others £500 for RWH Dilling followed by Aberdeen Angus heifers to £500 for a well put together sort in from TJ and BE Cowley with 28 Aberdeen Angus heifers averaging an impressive £351. Only 12 calves out of the 376 sold under £200.
Dairy Sired Bulls
An improved trade on the younger sorts, 20 Friesian bulls average £224 to a top of £345 for a trio in from PJ Wickett, Kilkhampton.
250 Store Cattle
A good entry of quality, well farmed stores especially in the younger section.
Forward cattle were in short supply and those carrying flesh sold very well topping at £2260 for a 25mth Aberdeen Angus from Messrs IR & JA Johns of Bude whose second bunch realised £2160 (x4) and Montbeliardes to £1970.
Best of the British Blues were £1960 for 3 from Messrs T & J Adams & Son of Torrington, a good run of Limousins from Messrs PS & KM Warren of Virginstow hit £1900 (4) with plenty of 16-18mth steers to £1700+.
Top this week of the heifers was £1850 for a 27mth British Blue from Messrs T & J Adams of Torrington. Limousin heifers from Messrs PS & KM Warren of Virginstow to £1710.
Native heifers with condition topped at £1810 for a 23mth Aberdeen Angus from Mr SW Graham of Bude, others from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son of Putford to £1780 & £1640 for (2) 21mth Aberdeen Angus from Messrs IR & JA Johns of Bude.
Herefords to £1640 for 5 at 22mth from Messrs WJ Wooldridge & Son. Holsteins topped at £1750 for a 34mth steer from Messrs IR & JA Johns who sold other Friesians to £1620.
180 Younger Store Cattle
A large entry saw a strong trade from start to finish.
A cracking run of strong single suckled 12mth Charolais from Mrs SA Pocock of Pancrasweek saw the best of the steers to £1900 with the second few at £1800 and the 3 strongest 12mth Charolais heifers to £1630.
Best of the Dairy x cattle to £1500 +, topping at £1800 for a 13mth British Blue from Handsford Farm Partners who sold Herefords to £1640 & Aberdeen Angus steers 14mth selling to £1590, with the best of the heifers from the same farm to £1480 for Aberdeen Angus heifers & £1480 for 5 British Blue heifers.
Other well fed Limousin steers from Messrs DF & ER James of Halwill to £1680 with others to £1600. Younger 10mth British Blue steers from Messrs R Wood & Partners of Holsworthy hit £1400 (6), other 8-10mth Limousins from Messrs DE & AM Olde of Morwenstow to £1050.
Grazing Cattle
A pure Devon from Messrs AW & KM Cole hit £1750, a 2016 British Blue Cow from Mr J Clark of Ashwater to £1360 and other British Blues Cows from Mr S Stevens of Alverdiscott to £1040.
OTM Weighing Cows
206p was the top for a Hereford Cow from Mr S A Pocock of Pancrasweek. Also 206p was achieved for a Devon Cow from Messrs T & A Mawtus of Tetcott.
