The Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service flag will be flying at half mast on Shalder Hill in Bude today in honour of a resident who served 26 years in the service.

Residents of Bude are commemorating the work of Mark Blatchford today, (January 12) who recently passed away, having worked with Bude Community Fire Station for more than two decades.

A spokesperson for Bude-Stratton Town Council said: "In honour of Mark Blatchford, the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service flag will fly at half mast on Shalder Hill on Friday, January 12, on behalf of Bude Community Fire Station .

"Mark served the Bude community for 26 years before his retirement in June 2018 and will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

At the most recent Bude-Stratton Town Council meeting, Cornwall councillor Peter LaBroy also paid personal tribute to Mr Blatchford.

A spokesperson from Bude Community Fire Station also added: "Firefighter Mark Blatchford joined the service in June 1992 and served the Bude community for 26 years before retiring June 9, 2018. Mark was a true hero, immensely proud to be part of the Fire Service, and can only be described as a local legend.

"The sad news has shocked our community, and we are devastated to have lost a local hero, gentleman, and genuine friend. It breaks all of our hearts here at Station 7.3 to have to display the Thin Red Line as an act of remembrance and solidarity, but the pain is even greater when it's one of our own.

"Our fire family will never forget you. Blackie - rest in peace, brother. Be sure to give everyone up there the laughs and stories you never failed to deliver to us."
