MORWENSTOW Community Players performed their latest production, ‘Mother Goose’, to four full houses last week.
First time producer Linda Hurles and veteran musical director Colin Tape together with the whole cast and crew had worked tirelessly to bring the magical production to the stage.
The Fairy Queen (Linda Tilbey) helped to set the scene as the story unfolded. Mother Goose (Paul Mannix) was under threat of being evicted. Her hapless son, idle Jack (Will Dearle) and lovely daughter Jill (Jemima O’Brien), and Jill’s sweetheart the Knave (Fay Mannix) try their best to help. It is only when the Fairy Queen invokes her magic and Gertrude (Lainey Cole) and Ermyntrude, the Goose that Lays the Golden Eggs (Carly Inch), appeared that the future looked brighter for the family.
Mother Goose finally paid her rent using one of Ermyntrude’s golden eggs but greedy landlord Jabberwock (Nigel Steer) and his inventor brother, Mad Max (Josh Steer) wanted Ermyntrude to lay golden eggs only for them.
A plot was hatched by the ‘Baddies’, Mad Max, Jabberwock and his two henchmen, the pompous Catchem (Jaik Payne) and the loveable fool Skinnem (Ken Boundy) to kidnap Ermyntrude in Max’s rocket and take her to the moon.
The ‘Goodies’ plan a rescue bid aided by the amazing jumping cow Buttercup (Louise and Trinity Chapman).
Along the way everyone meets some scary Moon Monsters and the Man in the Moon (Shorne Tilbey) who with more magic and a touch of moon madness orchestrates the rescue bid.
There was lots to boo and cheer and all was well in the end as the ‘Baddies’ get their comeuppance and the rest of the motley rescuers travel back to Earth to live happily ever after!
The company had sterling help from wardrobe mistresses Chris Hobbs, Jean Edwards and Shelagh Heard, stage manager Dan Hurles and his stage hands David Edwards, Tony Hamer, Jim Hurles, David and Toby Miles and Daniel Walter. The wonderful scenery was by Jim Hurles, assisted by Karen Hamer, Debbie Pye and Melissa Gutierrez; lighting and sound, Colin Phipps and David Inch; percussion, Terry Inch; make-up, Eithne King, Julie Hands, Tracy Casey and Katrin Marshall , and prompt Katrin Marshall. Box office and front of house: Gill Mannix.
