AN issue described by the mayor of Holsworthy as a ‘long standing problem’ is closer to being resolved.

There have been multiple incidents in recent times where lorries driving through Holsworthy miss the signage warning them of a ‘low bridge’ on Chapel Street - with the height of the former railway viaduct going across Chapel Street leaving HGV drivers having to reverse on a narrow road as they are unable to get under the bridge.

However, after discussions between Holsworthy Town Council and Devon County Council there could soon be improved signage warning drivers of the height of the 4.1 metre viaduct and signposting them to a route that diverts them around it.

At present, there is a small triangular sign further down the hill, however the proposed signage would be larger in prominence and indicate the diversionary route.

Holsworthy town councillors discussed the matter at their most recent full town council meeting and resolved to support the proposals, referring it back to Devon County Council who will be responsible for the implementation of the signage.

Cllr Jon Hutchings said: “Fingers crossed this will be more visible to high sided lorry drivers and can be agreed and erected as soon as possible.”
