LAUNCESTON’S future athletes have been buys, taking part in competitions across a variety of disciplines.

Students from St Jospeh’s School in Launceston have been showing off their sporting prowess recently, taking their skills to a number of events across the area.

The school’s girl’s rugby team kicked things off, as the Year 8 and Year 9 girls joined pupils from across the region at Bude RFC for a festival of rugby. The event saw participants develop their skills, build confidence and enjoy playing the game together.

A spokesperson from St Jospeh’s School said: “Every girl representing St Joseph’s showed outstanding enthusiasm, a fantastic attitude and a real willingness to learn. Just as importantly, they demonstrated the very best of rugby through their friendship, respect, encouragement and teamwork. Girls’ rugby continues to grow at St Joseph’s, and it is wonderful to see our pupils embracing the opportunities the sport provides. Rugby is about so much more than what happens on the pitch — it’s about belonging, building confidence, making friendships and being part of a team. As a coach, I couldn’t be prouder of the girls and the way they represented our school.”

As well as rugby, there was also action in the eventing arena, as some of the school’s equestrians displayed their talents as part of the teams inaugural outing.

St Joseph’s Equestrian Team competed in the Blundell’s School Arena Eventing Competition at Chard, securing podium positions for the school.

“Last term, our newly formed equestrian team competed in the Blundell’s School Arena Eventing Competition at Chard,” the spokesperson explained. “And they absolutely smashed their very first event!

“First team place in the 60cm, Second team place in the 80cm. We could not be prouder of all the students who took part: William, Ruby, Kezia, Isla, Eleanor and Lily. You were all fantastic ambassadors for St Joseph’s, and what a way to kick off your eventing journey!”

However, it isn’t just the school’s equestrians who have been enjoying success, St Joseph’s footballers have also been showing their talent.

After a day of dominant performances, grit, and outstanding sportsmanship, the school’s U11 football squad returned as champions from the OCRA Small Schools Tournament

Commenting on their efforts, the spokesperson said: “All nine players involved were a absolute credit to the school. Beyond their brilliant skill on the pitch, they conducted themselves with impeccable sportsmanship and respect from start to finish.”

Though not all of the sporting events have been about competition, some of the school’s golfers have also been honing their skills at a coaching day at St Enodoc Golf Club.

The group enjoyed a great day on the driving range and chipping area, before putting their new skills into practice with a few holes of Texas Scramble. Along the way, they picked up some excellent coaching tips, learned more about golf etiquette and, most importantly, discovered the value of supporting and encouraging each other. Special prizes, including Wombat Golf balls and St Enodoc markers, were awarded to Ed, Dexter, Josh and Henry in recognition of their sportsmanship, perseverance and effort.
