RESIDENTS were transported back to 1940’s Britain last week, as a local pub put on a show to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

Last week marked 80 years since the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces, officially marking the surrender of all German military operations in 1945.

And to mark the occasion, one pub spared no expense, transforming its premises into a haven for 1940’s memorabilia.

On Sunday, May 11, the Fox and Grapes in Lifton, hosted military and classic vehicle displays, static and live fire weapon displays, along with living history displays, military charity stands, daytime activities and events.

The event has become increasingly popular with locals, with the venue becoming known for its efforts for military anniversaries. In 2024, the pub welcomed residents to mark the D-Day 80, with a similar event, even having an RAF Rescue Helicopter land for visitors to get a closer look.

Not to be outdone, this year’s event pulled out all the stops. As well as displays, the pub was visited by both a Lynx Helicopter and a Westland Wessex Helicopter, allowing residents to watch the landing and see them up close.

Following the big moment, the evening featured a remembrance ceremony, camping and 1940’s entertainment.
