POLICE have been out and about in Launceston and Callington, doing their bit to keep drugs off the streets.

As part of its ongoing campaign, local forces have been carrying out a proactive operation in licensed premises across Launceston and Callington, in an effort to keep communities safe.

Working alongside Jasper, a passive drugs detection dog, officers visited a number of venues as part of Operation Pubs Against Drugs (PAD).

The operation was designed to disrupt the use of recreational drugs by deterring people using, carrying or supplying them, while also supporting venues in providing a safe and welcoming environment for customers.

“Drug dealing and drug use can happen anywhere. These operations are vital in making sure we’re playing our part in keeping people safe by disrupting drug supply and other drug related offences,” said Sergeant Dan Lewis, who organised operation PAD.

“It shows communities that we’re proactive; that we take drugs off the streets, target drug suppliers and work with licensed premises to keep people safe.

“Not only that, but it’s an opportunity for us to encourage people to make safe decisions and to enjoy a safe night out without using drugs.”

Police say that these high-visibility patrols help identify and prevent drug-related activity, while sending a clear message that drug misuse and drug supply will not be tolerated within our local night-time economy.
