A car boot in Stratton has continued its support of the local hospital with a further financial donation.
In 2010 The League of Friends of Stratton Hospital, led by Mrs Candy Baker, chair of trustees, launched a £1-million Development Fund to enable the public to help NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly to transform the 148-year-old hospital into a fine purpose-built 21st century community hospital. Ray Hockin, trustee of the League of Friends supervised the fund raising, the public responded with creativity and great generosity.
The new hospital was opened in 2013 and the public continues to support health services in the hospital and community.
Chris Heard, a local retired farmer, runs Pendeen Car Boot Sales in Stratton, and has been a great supporter of the League of Friends since 2012.
Chris and his team have enabled the league volunteers to collect funds from the public at these enjoyable weekly events (weather permitting) from Easter to late October every year except in the 2020 lockdown. The annual amounts ranged from £4,000 to £10,000 and the total so far is £81,911.80!
A spokesperson said: “The league is very grateful for Chris’ generous and valuable contribution and for the opportunity to make people aware of the public’s continuing vital support.”
Chris recently presented Ann Furse, chair of The League of Friends of Stratton Hospital with a cheque for £9,260.78 which is the collection total this year despite eight cancellations due to bad weather.
