On Saturday, March 12, Talan’s Trust hosted a fund raiser for Ukraine based charity Tabletochki, a children’s cancer charity that was formed 12 years ago.

Sarah Penny, chairman of Talan’s Trust  was made aware of this charity through her contacts in the childhood cancer world, Tabletochki had put out a plea to raise £75,000 to help get children in active treatment safely out of the Ukraine and into neighbouring countries hospitals. Many of these children were spending hours in damp hospital  basements during air raids whilst hooked up to chemotherapy drips.

After speaking to the charity Tabletochki it was  a unanaminous decision by Talan’s Trust committee to try and help.

A cake sale was decided upon and a post put out on social media for help, the committee and Talan’s Trust supporters baked up a storm and local businesses helped by providing everything needed for free.

Adam and Anna from Bellinis started selling raffle tickets, provided the main raffle prize, a beautiful hamper as well as a special edition of vodka for Ukraine which people could bid for in a blind auction.

Sarah said: “From the time the doors open at 10.30am we did not stop, serving tea and cake and coffees outside at The Split Bean manned by Paul who gave all proceeds to the charity too.

“A huge thank you to the committee, Denise, Emma and Nicola, also Vicky and Michelle. Debbie and Michael from Central Methodist  and all the shops who so willingly gave.

“A massive thank you to all of you who baked so many beautiful and delicious cakes and all the people of Bude who came and ate and bought  cake.

“Thanks to all of you, what a team!”

They raised a huge £2,233.66. Talan’s Trust are collecting until the end of the week if anyone would like to help them take the total to £2,500, message Sarah by email [email protected]

Sarah added: “A huge thankyou to Lansdown Dairy, Martins Group, Sainsburys, Bellini’s Deli, Continental wholesale fruits and The Split Bean.”
