MOUNTING problems at a troubled parish council has had an unintended side effect – the temporary closure of its public toilets.
Tintagel Parish Council is currently without staff or councillors after a long running bitter row over the closure of the visitor centre came to a head – leaving the town without a local council.
Cornwall Council has confirmed that the remaining four councillors have resigned their seats, meaning that with no councillors, the body is not quorate and thus legally cannot make decisions.
In a public notice confirming the departure of the councillors, it stated: “Due to the resignations of Naomi Appleby Tremain, Zoe Coshall, Janet Akers, Debbie Bielby, four vacancies have arisen in the office of councillor.
“If by December 10 after the date of this notice, a request for an election to fill said vacancy is made in writing to the Proper Officer by ten electors for the said parish, an election will be held to fill the said vacancy, otherwise the vacancy will be filled by co-option. If an election is called, it will take place not later than February 17, 2026.”
It is understood that an election has been requested to fill the vacancies in addition to filling other vacancies after the previous departures of John Brooks, Alexandra Jenny and Paul Morris.
With the council not legally able to make decisions, this has had an impact on its ability to offer services and as a result, the public toilets operated by the council have been ordered to close.
A statement issued on behalf of Tintagel Parish Council said: “Due to the resignation of all staff and councillors at Tintagel Parish Council, the public toilets will be closed temporarily until the new council is in place, likely to be February 2026.
“Updates will be issued when available on the Tintagel Parish Council website and this Facebook page.”
