A GROUP dedicated to inspiring the next generation of performers is set to put some of the region’s best on-stage talents in the spotlight as it prepares for its latest production.

Since its inception, Launceston Youth Music Theatre (LYMT) has been nurturing young local talent through acting, singing, and movement classes, however, the group is best known for its impressive productions, wowing audiences in the North Cornwall town.

After already impressing with their productions of Shrek the Musical, Legally Blonde and School of Rock, the group’s performers are set to take to the stage for their performance of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods.

Into the Woods will be performed at Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre from Thursday, August 27, to Saturday, August 29.

Commenting on the upcoming production, Oliver Midwinter, one of LYMT’s team, said: “Anyone familiar with the work of Stephen Sondheim will know that his musicals are among the most challenging in the catalog. Following the success of our February production of School of Rock, our creative team gathered to discuss what should come next. It quickly became clear that it was time to truly challenge our Senior Company, aged 13 to 18, with a production that reflected their maturity, exceptional theatrical ability and unwavering commitment to LYMT.

“The answer was clear: Into the Woods.

“For those unfamiliar with the show, Into the Woods is a magical and thought-provoking musical that intertwines some of the world's best-loved fairy tales. Beneath its enchanting story lies a powerful exploration of wishes, consequences, hope and responsibility, brought together through adventure, humour and unforgettable music.

“As the story unfolds in an enchanted forest, we wanted our production to be immersed in a setting that reflected the magic of the piece itself. This summer, Into the Woods will be performed at the newly refurbished Sterts Arts and Environmental Centre, nestled on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Its unique covered amphitheatre provides the perfect backdrop, allowing us to transform the space into an atmospheric woodland. We are incredibly excited to bring our talented cast of 21 young performers to this much-loved Cornish theatre and share the production with Sterts' passionate community of theatre-goers.”

For performers and crew alike, this production holds a special significance, with performers set to take to the stage with the musical backing of a live orchestra.

“One of the most exciting aspects of this production is that our cast will be accompanied by a live orchestra of 14 exceptionally talented musicians,” said Oliver. “Recently, the company came together for its Sitzprobe— a rehearsal where the acting company and orchestra perform the score together. The room was filled with anticipation as musicians tuned their instruments, music stands were arranged, and performers took their seats. As the rehearsal began there was a real sense that something special was coming together.”

With the production set to wow audiences, LYMT is hoping Into the Woods will encourage even more local aspiring actors to join the 100 other young people already getting involved.
