WHEN I’m speaking with local people in South East Cornwall, they often say that they want more money in their pockets at the end of each month. Reducing pressures on energy bills and transport costs or setting our children up for the new school year is a vital part of how I want to drive our area forward and action the things that people want to see.

I am focused on practical support for local people in South East Cornwall - not gimmicks or headline-grabbing promises that will never be delivered. It’s about things that make everyday life easier and give families that bit of breathing room to enjoy their time together and be able to afford some treats for the kids.

Too many families are still feeling the pressure of higher household bills and the rising cost of everyday essentials. Local businesses are facing significant challenges too.

Since day one, I’ve been up in Westminster championing our special corner of the country. I raise South East Cornwall continuously in Parliament, whether that’s in debates, statements, or asking questions to Ministers. I make our area central in discussions about energy costs, healthcare, transport, education, and many, many more issues.

I’ve been fighting South East Cornwall’s corner, meeting with the Prime Minister Andy Burnham to raise concerns that you have spoken with me about. It’s great to see the practical actions that the Government has taken and it clearly shows that they are listening. That’s why I welcome the action that he has taken in his first months in government to provide immediate support while creating the environment for a stronger economy in the long term.

This Labour government’s decision to remove VAT from household electricity bills will be welcome news for families still feeling the strain of high energy costs. Extending the £2 bus fare cap throughout 2027 will also help keep everyday travel affordable for people trying to get to work, education, or essential appointments.

Parents will benefit from steps to reduce the cost of school uniforms, helping to ease some of the pressure that comes with raising a family. Measures to strengthen consumer protections and tackle subscription traps should also help people avoid unexpected costs.

I’m pleased to see support being provided for the local businesses that are at the heart of our communities. Pubs, social clubs and music venues will benefit from a 20 per cent reduction in business rates from next April, alongside changes designed to help businesses grow and create jobs.

There is, of course, much more work ahead. The challenges facing families and businesses will not disappear overnight. However, these steps show a clear commitment to supporting local people, backing local businesses and helping our communities in South East Cornwall thrive.

I will continue listening to residents and making the case for our area up in Westminster. My priority remains simple: standing up for South East Cornwall and delivering practical improvements that make a real difference to everyday life.
