WE’VE had a major win for North Cornwall this week, after Wain Homes officially withdrew its application to renege on more than £350,000 of promised infrastructure funding from its development in the town.

This is money intended for education, healthcare and transport. This is a huge win, but is only the first in our ongoing fight against North Cornwall’s infrastructure emergency. I’ll soon be bringing forward legislation to tackle developer greed and ensure infrastructure is put in place first.

I was also proud to #BackBritishFarming this week and stand alongside the farmers who are the backbone of our economy and our way of life here in North Cornwall. I campaigned hard against the government’s proposed Family Farm Tax all last year, and was pleased to see the major U-turn on it - celebrating the win for our farmers. Since then, I’ve continued pushing DEFRA through letters and direct exchanges with Ministers, including raising the devastating impact of Bluetongue recently in the Commons and pushing for financial support from the Department. I regularly meet farmers across North Cornwall to hear what matters most to them - and Buying British, and supporting these local farmers, really helps protect our food security and ensures their way of life can continue here for generations to come.

In other news, I’ve officially launched my ‘North Cornwall Community Champions’ awards, to recognise the dedicated, talented and selfless people who do so much to make our towns and villages better here in the constituency. There are countless unsung heroes across our communities who give their time and energy to help others, and I want to make sure they receive the recognition they deserve. I’m working with local charities and community organisations to make sure these awards shine a light on those who contribute so much. As part of my campaign I mentioned on housing, I’m looking forward to continuing this fight during the talks we’ve secured with the Prime Minister in ‘Number 10 North’ which are coming soon. I’ll be pushing to give Cornwall greater control over infrastructure levies, as we negotiate our devolution deal. The PM himself has acknowledged that Cornwall lacks basic infrastructure, so we need to make sure new development delivers for local communities - and I’ll ensure this is part of the conversation in our upcoming talks.

Finally, I’ve given my full backing to a joint Liberal Democrat letter calling for sanctions, a trade ban and a full review of UK financial links to settlement activity following Israel’s E1 settlement plan - and was pleased to see the Government finally listen this week in their announced statement. The plan is illegal under international law and must be stopped. So many North Cornwall constituents raise this issue with me on doorsteps and in their correspondence, and I believe the Government must now take further action to ensure it is not on the wrong side of history.
