A FATHER and daughter duo from Dunheved Bowling Club recently became the Cornwall area champions in the national Family Pairs competition as Colin and Claire Fishleigh had a run of successful results to take the title.
Their first match was against a brother and sister duo, Daniel Sturtridge and Bex Helleur from Stenalees. The game was close all the way through but the Dunheved pair managed to clinch victory with a 19-15 win.
In the next round they played Jason and Oskar Bryan from Camelford. Again, both Claire and Colin played well and were able to keep the pressure on throughout the game, coming away with a brilliant 29-12 win and a place in the final.
The Cornwall area final was played at their home green of Dunheved and their opponents were brothers Kevin and Dennis Butler from Chacewater.
This was one of the closest scoring matches yet, but with plenty of home supporters cheering them on, Colin and Claire earned the title of Cornwall area winners.
This result put them in the last 32 pairs in England and the next stage of the competition was to play off against the Devon area winners. They headed to Okehampton to compete against a pair from Torbay Country Bowls Club.
The match had a lot of high-scoring ends with both teams picking up some big shot counts on multiple occasions. However, after 18 ends the Devon team were triumphant with a 25-22 win. They will now go on to play the winners of the Somerset area final.
A club spokesperson said: “Dunheved Bowls Club would like to congratulate Colin and Claire on their achievement of becoming the county champions and there are still lots of exciting competitions taking place.”
