THE final match of Jacob Masters’ 10-year reign as South Petherwin’s first team captain ended in defeat at Grampound Road on Saturday, however it failed to take the shine off a remarkable season that ended in promotion.

The village outfit have put together an impressive squad to not only win two T20 competitions in 2026 in the shape of the Isaac Foot Cup and Rosevear Cup – they have also returned to Division Two East of the Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League having finished as runners-up to champions Saltash.

Down at Grampound Road, with the hosts desperate to play in their quest for survival, Petherwin, who were without opening batsman Taylor Gerry, star all-rounder Sam Pengelly and Cornwall Over 60s star Paul Clements, chose to field.

The home side racked up 189-6 from their 30 overs with former first team captain Chris Roberts making 63 after opener Stephen Matthwes whacked a quickfire 41. All of Petherwin’s five-man attack took a wicket including a brace for left-arm spinner Adrian Clements (2-39).

Needing over a run-a-ball from the outset was never going to be easy, but Petherwin set the platform via Billy Martin and Ian Searle before Andrew Brenton made 15 from just 10 balls.

However, the Roadies took regular wickets throughout as the visitors slipped to 88-6.

Masters with 26 from 24 balls and Clements (40no) kept their hopes alive, but they were dismissed for 163 with 12 balls remaining.

Grampound’s win ensured they finished ahead of Boconnoc who saw their clash abandoned at St Minver due to bad light.

St Minver, who ended fourth, level on points with St Austell Thirds, saw their bowlers struggle as Boconnoc amassed a healthy 280-9 from their 42 overs.

The hosts were flying along at 181-2 with Ben Hawken (82) and Alex Scullard (62) unbeaten, but the fading light ensured there was no winner.
