BOND TIMBER CORNWALL CRICKET LEAGUE DIVISION TWO EAST

Holsworthy v Lanhydrock

HOLSWORTHY’S bowlers got their batsmen out of jail as they recorded a second league win in three matches with a thrilling four-run success over promotion-hopefuls Lanhydrock on Saturday.

The Trees were staring down the barrel having mustered just 95 all out on a tough track to bat on, but the home attack responded in style with veteran spinner Graham Wild claiming 4-27 to dismiss the Bodmin side for just 91.

After a damp week, Lanhydrock chose to field and got off to a fine start as young seamer Jacob Eldridge dismissed Aiden Gerry and Brendan Harris for ducks.

Jack Greening hung around for nine before being bowled by Sam Remedios, before left-arm spinner Ruben Turner dismissed Sam Stacey and Guy Beagley in quick succession.

Jamie Eldridge, who went on to claim 5-32 with his off-spin, snared Nick Ward for nought, but 26 from number four Ryan Walter and 23 from the hard-hitting Bilal Darbar gave them a sniff.

However, once they were separated the end came quickly as Eldridge ran through the tail.

Walter gave the new ball to Gerry (2-12 off 9) and his flat off-spin got the big wicket of the dangerous Remedios who was taken by Nick Ward for nine.

Darbar (1-26) bowled Mike Horne for four and when Christian James was snaffled by Harris for a single, it was game on.

Nathanael James became the first of three stumping victims for Walter off Wild’s left-arm spin with 36 on the board, the third of which was the dangerous Ben Attfield for 24 with 68 on the board.

Even so, 28 with four wickets in-hand should have been doable, but a further three wickets fell for a further two runs.

Tension built as Ryan Butler (12) and Ruben Turner (5no) got it down to six required, however Guy Beagley’s first delivery bowled the former swinging to leg.

Skipper Ryan Walter praised his bowlers for the turnaround.

He said: “To try and defend 95 was always going to be a difficult ask even if they were really good bowling conditions, but at tea we said we had to go out there and give it a go, and we were brilliant.

“We bowled and fielded exceptionally well and managed to take wickets all of the way through.

“We got them 70-9 but the last wicket pairing batted well to get them close, and with the four bowlers having used their overs, we had a decision to make.

“Guy was up for it and first ball their batsman has tried to whack it for six and missed, so it was a great win in the end.”

Walter admits their batsmen need to step up, but admitted it was tough against their promotion-chasing visitors.

He said: “Having only won once beforehand, it was important to try and get another although it’s still quite early in the season.

“But we’ll just take it week by week and see what happens. On Saturday we came up against a very good attack in conditions which weren’t easy, but on paper we have a decent line-up so I’m sure it’ll turn around soon.

“We’ll now just look forward to Tintagel on Saturday. We’re historically pretty strong at home, and if we bowl and field like we did on Saturday, we shouldn’t be too far away.”
