Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League report and summary scores — Saturday, August 3
WERRINGTON warmed up for Saturday’s must-win clash against leaders Penzance with a 20-point victory at bottom side Falmouth in the ECB Cornwall Premier League
On a day where morning and lunch time rain delayed the start of a handful of matches around the Duchy, Falmouth could only muster 141 before they were bowled out with 28 balls unused.
Richard Kellow’s 60 was the only score of note as Werrington’s six-man attack all bowled well.
Teenager Dan Barnard (2-19) knocked over openers Scott Kellow (18) and Grant Stone (6) early on, paving the way for spinners Adam Hodgson (4-26) and Matt Robins (1-31) to apply the breaks in the middle.
Fourteen overs were lost due to rain in the chase, meaning after the Duckworth/Lewis calculations were made, the visitors required 111 in 36 overs.
Openers Hodgson (13) and Adam Jenkin (9) decided to see off the new ball before Jono Baldock (20) and the in-form Matt Robins (49no) got the job done with 34 balls to spare. They sit 27 points behind Penzance with five games remaining.
Falmouth’s failure to pick up more than three points meant that Callington’s heavy 124-run defeat at home to Truro didn’t prove as costly.
Rain meant the match was reduced to 42 overs per side but after a slow start Truro reached 219-6 thanks to Kelvin Snell’s unbeaten 59, 40 from Charlie Kent and quickfire twenties from Kyle Van Rooyen (26 off 14) and Rob Harrison (23 off 14).
West Indian Yannick Leonard was the pick of the bowlers, taking 1-24 off his nine overs.
Aidan Libby got the innings off to a quick start, thrashing 23 out of the first 28 before he went.
Danny Carroll (10) and Nick Parker (11) took the score to 44 before Carroll’s departure to Van Rooyen (3-17) signalled a shocking collapse as Truro dismissed their hosts for just 95 with only Joe White and James Boundy reaching double figures of the rest. A failure to score 100 meant Callington accumulated no batting points.
Werrington seconds are now just 17 points off third bottom Ludgvan after a potentially pivotal day in the battle for survival in County Division One.
While Werrington earned an excellent 32-run success over Gorran at Ladycross, Beacon had annihilated the West Cornwall club by eight wickets, bowling them out for 31 before knocking it off for two, meaning Ludgvan, who Werrington face at Ladycross on August 31, earned just one point.
Werrington skipper Mark Hodgson won the toss and chose to bat and made a competitive 216-8.
In an excellent team effort, eight of the ten batsmen used reached double figures with Hodgson’s 34 the best. Darren Webber (29), Darren Johns (26) and Dan Warring (21no) all passed twenty.
Gorran would have been confident of chasing it down but came up short despite James Rennie’s 87 and twenties from star man Robin Kendall (22) and Andrew Grant (23).
In an excellent all-round performance, Cornwall Under 17s player Cameron Wakefield was the star of the show with 4-26 while Hodgson (2-36) and Danny Warne (2-33) were also in the wickets.
Mid-table Launceston were well beaten by four wickets at title-chasing Redruth seconds.
After choosing to bat, Launceston got off to a flier thanks to Robert Mutch’s 46 and useful contributions from Michael Bolt (17) and Dan Tilley (14).
However once they all departed, only Sam Pengelly and Gavin Wallis — with 24 and 17 respectively — reached double figures as they were dismissed for 140 in the 38th over.
Redruth’s innings was dominated by opener Jack Hale who hammered the bowling to all parts in his 84.
The highlight for Launceston came at the end as 16-year-old spinner Ethan Green (3-3) on first team debut, took three wickets in just nine balls including Hale, but the damage had been done as the end came in the 23rd over.
St Minver made it back-to-back victories at Luckett but still remain in the bottom two in Division Two East after nearest rivals St Erme and Saltash Town both won.
At Chapel Field, Luckett won the toss and chose to bat but could only muster 144 all out as Charlie Hawken picked up 5-40. Ryan Pooley (3-30) and Hamish Rathbone (2-46) claimed the other five wickets.
Andrew Hoskin top-scored with 35 as he and Ryan Brown (27) were the only ones to pass 20.
The St Minver reply was dominated by Matt Gilbert and South African Allistar Cottle.
After Antony Ash, Ben Hawken and Steve Hawke all went cheaply, Gilbert, who has played seconds all season, carried his bat for an unbeaten 50 with Cottle making 43. Leion Cole took 2-37.
Bude were well beaten by Newquay who remain only one of two teams across the Eastern section to remain unbeaten.
After being forced to field, Bude got off to a great start as Tom Rhodes and Tommy Rodda were dismissed at 15-2.
However the innings was revitalised by half centuries from Michael Harding (81), Julian Dimas (53) and Tom Eggins (63) as they totalled 287-8. James Findlay (3-66) and Matt Williams (2-60) shared five wickets.
Openers, Warren Rumble (54) and Williams (20) put on 51 for the first wicket but from there on it was hard work.
Rumble departed at 95-2 and from there on only Tom Hall (34) and Findlay (15) reached double figures as they were bowled out for 159.
It was a much better afternoon for Bude seconds as they moved out of the bottom two in Division Three East after beating Roche by 101 runs at Crooklets.
After choosing to bat, the hosts knocked up 221-4. Skipper Gordon Wint (73) and Matt Whitefield (57no) both made half centuries while Paul Williams on his first appearance of the season, added a useful unbeaten 32.
The visitors, who now drop to the foot of the standings, never got started with the bat, with only Tyler Trudgeon making any impression. He made 51 as they were dismissed for 120.
Mark Whitefield went for just 17 off his 12 overs as well as dismissing Will Harvey, while Gary Moore (2-29), Mike Taylor (4-66) and Wint (3-5) took the glory.
Their win meant that they moved above Launceston seconds who lost by 90 runs at home to Boconnoc.
The Deer Park outfit won the toss in a game reduced to 40 overs and made 226-9.
After the early departure of Jason Doney to David Cox (3-58), key men Michael Blake (56) and Jon Niblett (33) put on a century stand before their departures and that of Rob Piper (0) saw them fall to 125-4.
However Rob Foot (62) and Will Geach (41) then hammered the bowling to all parts before a late flurry of wickets to Cox and Shane Davey (3-39) saw their progress stall slightly.
Former first team captain Jon Parsons was back in the fold for Launceston, but despite his 47 and Darren Jenkin’s 21, they never got close as spinners Joe Coates (5-39) and Niblett (2-36) did the bulk of the damage in their 136 all out.
Thankfully for Launceston, St Neot were also thrashed by Tintagel at Butts Field.
The hosts racked up a massive 339-5 thanks to Jason Seldon’s unbeaten 116 and half centuries from Jordan Burnard (78) and Ben Lane (51no).
Knowing they needed all the points they could get, St Neot made 194 with Les Harrison’s 38 the highest.
Simon Fry continued his recent wicket-taking form with 3-54 while Ryan Pooley (2-32) and Alex Gibbons (2-62) also shared four.
Runaway leaders Holsworthy fell to a second successive defeat by 11 runs at home to Callington seconds.
The visitors arrived in Devon with a rare full-strength side but could only make 136 in a game reduced to 35 overs due to rain, as the home bowlers did the business.
After Callington reached 63-1 thanks to Toby May (24) and Toby Beresford-Power, change bowlers Ryan Bridgeman (2-32) and George Wilcox (3-29) turned the game on its head by sharing five wickets as they fell to 109-6.
Alex Mortimore made 14 late on before Rob Mitchell took 3-0 for off his solitary over.
Callington’s bowling attack had all played Premier League cricket at some point this season, and it showed as they defended the score.
Alex Mortimore took 4-24 off his nine overs while Jim Shorten (2-26) and Ashley Small (2-34) also bowled well.
For the home side, extras top-scored with 39 while Matt Shepherd (29) and Sam Stacey (17) were the only batsmen to reach double figures.
Holsworthy, who remain 30 points clear at the top, were given a helping hand in the title race by South Petherwin who shocked second-placed St Blazey at Kennards House.
Like at Launceston, the game was reduced to 40 overs, but it didn’t stop the hosts recovering from a mini-wobble to reach 208-5.
After openers Nick Gerry (21) and Adam Warne (16) got the innings off to a solid start, four quick wickets fell, Cornwall Under 15s player Taylor Gerry rescued the innings with an unbeaten 65 while Paul Clements (40) and Adrian Clements showed their experience (30no).
Antony Best departed early on but Blazey got off to an excellent start through Daniel Kendall (59) and Adam Thomas before the most dramatic of collapses saw them dismissed for just 127.
Left-arm spinner Adrian Clements was the star of the show with 5-41 while Adrian Warne chipped in with 3-22.
Werrington thirds are the new leaders of Division Four East after overcoming previous table-toppers Saltash St Stephens by four wickets at Ladycross.
The visitors chose to bat and made a par 180-7 thanks to Shayn Rencher’s 63 and five batsmen reaching double figures.
Nick Oldaker went for just 22 off his ten overs as well as picking up a wicket, while Freddie Ward (2-58) and Tom Bailey (2-31) took four wickets between them.
The home reply was a real team effort with Simon Bishop’s 60 the highlight. He received useful support from Trevor Dingle (24) and Daniel Jenkin (34) before former skipper Richard Stanbury (26no) and Matt Chatfield (8no) saw them over the line with three balls to spare.
Luckett seconds’ long trip down to take on their Gorran counterparts was worth it as they comfortably won by 76 runs.
Daniel Broome — making his first appearance of the season — opened the batting and made 90 in their 228-5 before opening the bowling to take 5-31.
With the bat, Martin Budge (29) and Adam Piper (28) provided solid support while Benjamin Berry chipped in with 2-41 with the ball.
Delabole’s difficult season continued as they were well-beaten by visiting Buckland Monachorum.
The hosts could only muster 61 with Drew Burnard’s 13 the highest. Buckland knocked off the total in 11.3 overs with Gary Elkington unbeaten on 32. Shane Trewin and Adrian Pooley took a wicket apiece.
In Division Five East, a weakened South Petherwin seconds lost by nine wickets at their St Blazey counterparts.
Gareth Clements top-scored with 61 in their 159 all out with James Cawsey’s 34 the next best.
The hosts eased home with Mark Trudgeon making an unbeaten 62.
A strengthened Milton Abbot were two-wicket winners at Tideford seconds.
Nick Ireland (2-7), Tom Rickard (2-26) and Clive Holding (2-21) shared six wickets as Tideford were bowled out for 136.
The Milton Abbot reply got off to an equally poor start but were rescued by Ireland (17), Mark Jenkins (15), Charles Helyer (20) and Holding (32) as they scrambled home by two wickets.
In the basement tier, St Minver seconds need a maximum of 36 points from their final three games to secure the title.
On Saturday they beat visiting Launceston thirds by five wickets. They dismissed Launceston for 136 with Rob Hawken (5-24) and Josh Sanders (3-19) sharing eight wickets. Lois Thornton (35) and Andrew Baker (33) both made thirties but it didn’t prove enough as Jake Keast (44) and Tom Durrant (54no) managed the chase. Paul Bunn took 2-31 with his leg-spin.
Liskeard remain second after easing past Werrington fourths by six wickets at Lux Park.
Nigel Dennis (43) and Ben Sonely (36) were the only batsmen to pass seven as they were bowled out for 114.
The father and son duo of George (38) and Tim Hyslop (18) then laid the platform for the league’s top scorer, Andrew Cobb, to add an unbeaten 46.
Steve Pike was the pick of the bowlers with 2-18.
Just ten points separate third-placed Werrington and Tintagel in seventh after they won by nine wickets at Menheniot-Looe thirds.
The home side’s total of 202-6 was built around Mark Grassam’s unbeaten 117, while Aaron Washer took 3-23 off his ten overs.
Washer’s brilliant all-round game continued with the bat as he hammered the bowling to all parts in making 124 not out. Richard Pethick stayed with him at the other end for his unbeaten 44.
Gunnislake sit a point ahead of Tintagel after easing past bottom side St Stephen seconds by 107 runs in mid-Cornwall.
Five batsmen — James Brenton (56no), Harrison Astley (54), Stephen Lees (37no), Ian Mill (33) and Adam Emmerson (32) all passed 30 as Gunnislake ran up an impressive 241-5 off their 40 overs.
St Stephen were then dismissed for 134 with Kieran Broadfield’s 52 the best. Astley continued his superb game with 3-21 while George Jefferis (3-57) and Iain Barker (2-18) also chipped in.
