BUDE Town have bolstered their coaching staff for the rest of the South West Peninsula League Premier West season by drafting in former striker Tornado Bello as joint manager alongside Steve Hackett.
Plymouth-based Bello, who has had several spells at Broadclose Park as a player, was due to manage Western League Premier Division outfit Wellington this term, but pulled out of the move before their opening league game, citing he wasn’t ready to be a number one.
However, following discussions with Hackett he has jumped at the chance to get back involved with the Seasiders.
On Bello’s return, Hackett said: "I'm delighted to get T alongside me at the club. We need a new voice and a boost on and off the pitch to keep pushing and developing our players forward. Tornado is the perfect fit, he knows the players already and loves the club – he will be a really valuable asset and I'm looking forward to working with him.
“Let’s all welcome Big T and get right behind him and the boys as we look to kickstart our season.”
Bude opened both their league campaign and FA Vase adventure this week, both at home, but were beaten by Callington Town and Newton Abbot Spurs respectively.
Wednesday night’s league opener with Cally started well as Dylan Morgan guided in Harrison Swatton’s corner after just seven minutes, but the visitors then grew into the game and levelled through Fin Harrison on 22 minutes before Alex Jacob added a second 14 minutes later.
Bude piled on the pressure after the restart and had a big penalty shout on Billy Hopcroft waved away, before Cally broke to add a third 20 minutes from time via midfielder Calum Courts.
Bude were handed a lifeline five minutes from time when home man-of-the-match Harry Hopcroft slammed in a penalty after Jake Woodland was fouled, but despite incessant Seasiders pressure and Piran Friend forcing a fine save out of Jake Mead-Crebbin with the last play of the game, Callington took the three points.
South West Peninsula League Premier East side Newton Abbot Spurs came to Broadclose Park on Saturday and ran out 2-0 winners in the FA Vase First Qualifying Round.
Bude had plenty of possession in the first half, but failed to create any real chances against a well-organised visiting defence.
After the break, the Spurs really upped their performance as the hosts struggled to find their rhythm.
Newton Abbot eventually went in front when a superb free-kick from Saul Vanes found the top left-hand corner, and it was game over just before the end when sub Harry Page beat Leam Powell who made a series of fine saves and was deservedly named the Seasiders’ man-of-the-match.
Despite the defeat, a large crowd was at Broadclose Park, while local freestyler Sam Cunningham was able to keep the supporters and youngsters entertained with his remarkable skills.
Town are next in action this Saturday (3pm) when they welcome title hopefuls Camelford who have started the season with two victories over visiting St Mawgan and Dobwalls.
BUDE TOWN v Newton Abbot Spurs: Leam Powell; Ruan Tape, James Wheeler, Harry Hopcroft (capt), Aaron White, Fin Haste, Harrison Swatton, Harry Banks, Dylan Morgan, Piran Friend, Rio Anderson. Subs: Ollie Cleave, Tornado Bello, Dougie Green, Maximus Alvarez-Lopera, Carwyn Bluett.
Seasiders’ man-of-the-match: Leam Powell.
