TWELVE Cornish clubs will make their seasonal FA Vase bow tomorrow as they look for a long run in the famous old competition.

Three of those are from the Western League as St Blazey – who have won all three of their league games as well as reaching the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup – start as firm favourites when they entertain a new-look Launceston side who got their SWPL Premier West campaign underway on Tuesday with a 3-3 draw at Dobwalls.

Liskeard Athletic have two wins from four since promotion to Step Five and host Brixham, the Fishermen arriving in Cornwall having won the league meeting between the two in Devon back on August 4.

Torpoint Athletic have lost four successive games in all competitions after an opening day victory over Street, but last year’s Western League play-off semi-finalists should prove too strong for Somerset outfit Bishops Lydeard from SWPL Premier East at The Mill.

Western League Saltash United have a bye in the first round, as do league rivals Newquay who welcome Buckland Athletic in the league.

There are also eight ties involving SWPL Premier West sides, five of which have cross-Tamar battles.

From Cornwall, Bude Town host Newton Abbot Spurs, Callington welcome Tavistock in a local derby, Helston make the long trip up to much-fancied Cullompton Rangers and in-form Sticker head to South Devon to tackle Stoke Gabriel and Torbay Police.

Coming the other way, Torridgeside make the near five-hour round trip down to a Mousehole side who have lost both games so far since taking voluntary relegation from Southern League Division One South.

The most intriguing tie is at Penlee Park as Penzance – looking to build on last year’s superb campaign which saw them win both the SWPL League Cup and Cornwall Senior Cup – host Western League Bridgwater United, who are aiming for a return back to Step Four and with it Southern League football.

Two sides in rebuild mode clash at Wadebridge as the Bridgers welcome Wendron United. Camelford and Millbrook are the only Premier West clubs to have a bye.
