FA Vase First Round Proper preview – Saturday, October 10
JUST three Cornish clubs remain in this year’s FA Vase as the First Round Proper gets underway this Saturday.
One of the more intriguing clashes is at Camelford as the Step Six Camels from South West Peninsula League Premier West welcome Clevedon Town to Trefrew Park.
The ambitious Seasiders head down from North Somerset right in the mix at the top of the Western League Premier Division and recently appointed EFL legend Jamie Cureton as their new boss with former Bristol Rovers midfielder Chris Lines as their director of football.
However, Camelford regularly punch above their weight as shown by last year’s run to the Cornwall Senior Cup final and a fifth-placed finish.
They are the only Step Six club from the Duchy remaining, but both St Blazey and Newquay from the Western League are still going.
Amongst them are high-flying St Blazey who make an awkward-looking trip to Longwell Green Sports in Bristol.
The home side play in the Western League Division One – the equivalent of SWPL Premier West – and sit third with 25 points from 13 outings, one point adrift of leaders AEK Boco who have a game in-hand.
Newquay enjoyed a fine victory over Cornish rivals Liskeard Athletic on Wednesday night and the play-off chasing Peppermints welcome Dorset side Sturminster Newton United to Mount Wise.
Sturminster are just outside of the top five themselves in the equivalent Step Five division of the Wessex League Premier Division, meaning a really close contest could be in store.
Although out of the Vase, both Liskeard Athletic and Torpoint Athletic continue their Western League Premier Division campaigns tomorrow afternoon.
Liskeard host a Wellington side they beat 3-0 in Somerset back in September, while Torpoint make the short trip across the Tamar Bridge to Ivybridge Town who produced a 1-0 success at Tavistock in midweek.
Torpoint were beaten 4-1 by Buckland Athletic on Tuesday night, a result not helped by playing with 10 men for over an hour, and head to Erme Valley in 14th place, two places and one point ahead of their hosts.
FA Vase First Round Proper (3pm): Camelford v Clevedon Town, Longwell Green Sports v St Blazey, Newquay v Sturminster Newton United.
Western League Premier Division (3pm): Ivybridge Town v Torpoint Athletic, Liskeard Athletic v Wellington.
