SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

St Day 2 Launceston 0

THE Clarets made the long trip to St Day, looking to get back on track following their defeat to high-flying Liskeard.

On a perfect playing surface, both sides opened brightly although clear chances remained at a premium until the 24th minute as a long cross from the right by full-back Liam Chinn was met on the far post by Jordan Richards who squeezed a shot past Howie Evans.

The Clarets were right in the game but unable to build any sustained pressure. George Bills saw a 20-yard shot clip the outside of the post while young Gabe Rutter showed some nice touches in midfield in a game largely devoid of goalmouth action.

The second half was marginally livelier and Richards ran clear down the left, only for Evans to react sharply and block the shot.

Bills flicked a header towards goal only for home keeper Michael Palmer to save comfortably. Kian Berry was working hard to ignite the Launceston attack but collected a yellow card when, in his eagerness to make an impression, he followed through on the keeper.

James McNary replaced the hard-working Ethan Gwillam, but still the clear chance wouldn’t come.

In their desperation to score, the Clarets pushed right up, leaving big gaps at the back.

As the game entered added time with Launceston exposed, a cross from the left caused havoc in the Clarets defence leaving Paul Robertson to poke home a shot and seal a precious victory for St Day which saw them climb above Launceston in the table.
