In-form Magpies put four past battling Mousehole

SKIPPER Jedd Peschke continued his superb week with a brace as the Magpies made it three wins on the spin with a 4-0 success over Mousehole in windy conditions at Upcott Field.

The centre-half had missed the victory at St Mawgan a week earlier before coming off the bench to grab the winner at Launceston in midweek, but grabbed the first and last goals either side of efforts from Aaron Hart and Ben Sharpe.

Magpies boss Kevin Squire made three changes from midweek due to unavailability as Peschke, Jack Japes and Josh Down came in for Rory Simmons, Archie Reay and Craig Duff.

The opening exchanges saw both sides do little before the Devonians took a 10th minute lead. Peschke strode out of defence and let fly with a low shot from 35 yards towards the bottom left-hand corner that goalkeeper Warren Sarjantson should have saved.

After a nice run from visiting winger Isaac Joy, who soon went off injured following a heavy tackle, Jay Thomas went close to second, but could only drag his shot wide.

Mousehole frontman Innocent Kasonde curled an effort from 20 yards millimetres wide of the far post as the Seagulls looked for a response, but were indebted to the reflexes of Sarjantson to tip over Sharpe’s effort from eight yards on the stretch.

However it was the hosts who doubled their lead on 26 minutes with a moment of brilliance from Hart. Taking a pass in the left channel, he beat a couple of defenders with some quick feet before planting a fine finish into the bottom right corner from 25 yards.

Holsworthy went close to extending their lead before the break as Hart saw a shot blocked, before Sharpe narrowly lifted a half volley over the crossbar.

Again it was the Magpies having the better moments after the restart, Sharpe firing off target before striker Japes was denied by a fine block in the visitors’ box. Moments later, Peschke could only flick Thomas’ inswinging free-kick from the right narrowly wide of the far post.

Just before the hour the home side were denied by a superb last-ditch block from right-back Gareth Ireson, but it was 3-0 on 70 minutes as Sharpe rifled in a superb finish from the edge of the box.

Mousehole were tidy in possession and forced Chadwick into his first real save on 74 minutes after Kasonde was played through down the right side of the box.

However, just as it looked like the game would peter out, Holsworthy put the afterburners on. On 87 minutes, Peschke saw a shot saved by Sarjantson, however he was the fastest to the rebound and fired in.

Then, in injury-time, a fine run from midfielder Josh Down saw him taken down inside the box. Sharpe stepped up and saw his effort saved before somehow sending the rebound well over the bar.

In the end it didn’t matter as the Magpies, who don’t play again until the visit of Falmouth Town Reserves on Saturday, September 12, moved on to 12 points from a possible 18.
