SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE PREMIER WEST (SATURDAY)

Camelford 6 Wendron United 0

RYAN Downing continued his scintillating form with a hat-trick as Camelford put six past Wendron United at Trefrew Park.

The Camels took the lead just before the half-hour through Liam Higgins’ fine individual effort before Mark Gusterson and Downing made it 3-0 at the break.

The second half saw the hosts dominated with Higgins grabbing his second either side of Downing’s heroics.

Camelford boss Bobby Hopkinson recalled Ross Beare and Gusterson to the side that won 3-2 at Launceston a week earlier, while the Dron arrived sitting nicely in fourth and for the first 15 minutes were the better side.

However, Higgins’ moment of magic broke the deadlock as he received the ball out on the right wing before cutting inside and curling a shot into the far top corner.

It was 2-0 five minutes later as Gusterson took a pass from left-back Andy Boxall before rolling his marker and placing a shot into the side of the goal.

Wendron needed to get through to half-time but were undone as Downing broke into the box before being taken down, and although he saw his penalty saved, he smashed in the rebound.

Within 10 minutes of the restart it was 5-0 as a brilliant finish from Downing from just inside the box was followed by Higgins’ tap-in after Gusterson’s effort was saved.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men late on for a bad tackle on Josh Harris, and there was still time for Downing to win another penalty that he converted himself.

Hopkinson admitted he felt a big win was around the corner.

He said: “I’ve said recently that somebody was going to feel the full force of us soon, and Saturday was when it came together.

“Bar the first 15 minutes, it was a complete team performance and the decision-making throughout the team was exceptional, so hopefully we can continue in this vain in the coming games.”
