COUNTIES TWO CORNWALL
Bude 52 Newquay Hornets 5
BUDE completed their home matches in this season's league programme in emphatic fashion as they posted a half-century of points in defeating mid-table Newquay Hornets at Bencoolen Meadow last Saturday.
The home side were slow out of the blocks, but eventually opened the scoring 27 minutes from a driving maul finished off by skipper Will Hockridge. Fly-half Brad Thomas added the extras for 7-0.
Three minutes later they doubled their lead when almost from the restart, second row Joe Wilson made good ground before linking with flanker Matt Maniglia to create an opening for his fellow back-rower Finley Fry to charge over for thesecond try. Thomas' conversion attempt was spot on.
In contrast to their early difficulties in the opening period, Bude were soon into their stride after the break.
On 44 minutes, loosehead prop Charlie Firman picked up a loose ball and made a fine break before offloading to outside-centre Edy Hilliam-Cooke who made further good ground. He was stopped, but scrum-half Ollie Rowland was on hand to take the scoring pass and dot down. Again, Thomas made no mistake from the tee.
Just beyond the 50-minute mark Hockridge got his second try of the afternoon, along with Bude's fourth to secure a bonus point for his side, as again he proved unstoppable from close range following a well-worked line-out move. Once again Thomas slotted the conversion to increase the lead to 28-0.
With the game now moving into the final quarter, the line-out again proved productive for Bude as Wilson, now operating at No.8, having swapped places with Fred Saxton, broke from the tail and charged over.
A glance at the scoreboard suggested one-way traffic, but with Bude's penalty count rising and a general warning issued, Newquay finally opened their account via wing Damien Marzec following a quick move down the blindside.
Two further tries from Wilson in the 70th and 76th minutes, the first from a loose ball and the second, for his hat-trick, a clean pick up from an attacking scrum, kept the home supporters happy. Inside-centre Olly Denford, kicking with Thomas having been replaced, converted the first.
There was still time for Maniglia to bring up the half century as good clean handling from the hosts' backline created space on the wide outside which allowed him to dash up the touchline to dot down under the posts. Denford's successful conversion completed the scoring for 52-5.
This Saturday, in their final game in the league season, Bude make the long trip down west to face St Just, who, despite currently sitting once place above bottom club Bodmin in the league table, may just avoid relegation if results go their way in the final round of matches in Counties One Western West.
Meanwhile, Bude Seconds are away to Bideford Seconds in a friendly fixture on Saturday, but Bude Colts have no game. On Sunday, Bude Ladies are away to Topsham Tempest Ladies in Women's NC2 South West (West) (2.30pm).
